Born in:
San Antonio, Texas
Resided in:
San Antonio, Texas
Willie Newton born January 16, 1936 to George Newton Sr (born in Luling) and Rosa Lee Newton (Davis-Handson) born in San Antonio.
His older brother George Newton Jr. was a hero to him. Eventually the roles reversed when he became a caregiver for his Brother.
Sadly, his parents and brother preceded him in death. As well as his beloved Auntie Catherine (LadyBird) Handson, who helped raise him and his brother.
After his service in the Army as an Armor Command Specialist, where he earned a Good Conduct Medal, he went to work at Kelly Air Force Base at Security Hill until his retirement in 1989.
Willie had a rich personal life. He stayed in close contact with his Phillis Wheatley High School class and was involved in the Alumni Association.
He also worked at the Davis-Scott YMCA. The people who worked there and attendees of all ages became another family to him, and he was a friend and champion to them.
Willie has helped more people over the years than can be listed here. One especially close friend (he referred to as a sister), Bernice Carter of California, formerly from S.A.
He will be missed by all including his remaining family, cousins Gladys Ford, Laverne Harmon, Robert Boyd, and all their children.
Willie was always considered to be a humble man. Per his wishes, there will be no funeral services. Instead, a simple placement of his ashes will be interred at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery where friends and family will be able to visit and show love and respect to him.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Davis-Scott YMCA or the Phillis Wheatley HS Alumni Association in his name.
