McAurther Stephens, affectionately known as “Big Mac” or “Mac Attack,” passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at the age of 81.

Born on October 19, 1943, in Shiner, Texas, McAurther was the beloved son of the late Cora Ann Brooks and Clarence Stephens. A proud veteran, he served his country with honor in the United States Marine Corps, carrying the discipline and strength he learned there throughout his life.

After his military service, McAurther pursued a career in healthcare, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. He dedicated over 40 years of compassionate service to University Hospital, specializing in the operating room. Known throughout the hospital halls for his signature Texas flair — scrubs paired with cowboy boots — McAurther brought a unique charm and professionalism to every shift. His colleagues often described him as “dapper,” not just in style but in character.

Beyond his work, McAurther was a man of immense kindness, generosity, and integrity. With an infectious smile and a giving heart, he never hesitated to hold the door open or lend a hand to someone in need. His favorite saying, “Always be your rock,” wasn’t just words — it was how he lived.

But above all, McAurther’s proudest role was that of a father. As a single dad, he raised two daughters with unwavering love, strength, and grace. He was their rock, their protector, and their greatest supporter.

McAurther’s legacy lives on through his daughters, his extended family, and the countless lives he touched throughout his journey. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished by his daughters, Marcella Toudouze (Veronica Toudouze), Mercedes Stephens; his sister, Dinah Stephens-Taylor, grandchildren, Luis Alberto Garcia, London Ceira Stickney, Juliet Elizabeth Mejia-Stephens, Logan McAurther Mejia-Stephens and Baby Stephens- Toudouze on the way.

  4. I worked with Mac for 20 years and I don’t know that I’ve ever known a finer man. I may well have known several as-fine-as but none finer. A quiet, exceptionally humble, elegantly gentle man, I remember him reviewing every detail of the patient’s situation, needs and care assuring the utmost in safety at all times and showing up in a suit and tie with a dozen roses just to bless a coworker with a wonderful birthday. Yes, he was my “Mac Attack” brother and I was his “Old Bull” and it was a very high honor to walk the halls with him and serve at his side. It was a very high honor indeed. I have missed you my brother. Your Old Bull

He had a way of making people seen and supported, and his legacy will live on in countless lives he touched – patients, coworkers, and friends alike. Please know that this memory will be cherished deeply by all of us who had the privilege to know him. We honor his life, his service, and profound difference he made in our world.
