Kasab El-Amin

kasab el-amin

August 2, 1930 ~ April 29, 2026

Born in: Fairfield, Texas
Resided in: San Antonio, Texas

Wash Johnson, affectionately known as “Shorty”, “Paw-Paw” and “Uncle Wash” was born August 2, 1930 in Fairfield, Texas, to Pinkie and Will Johnson. Uncle Wash was reared in a Christian home by Pinkie and Wesley Hatcher, Sr. where love abided. He, along with his siblings, Wesley Jr., Troy, Myrtle, Martha, Mary, Evelyn, Annie, Flower, Bessie, Riley, Bonnie, Richard, and Berta Mae shared an unbreakable bond of love, admiration and friendship with one another. Uncle Wash was educated in the Fairfield Independent School District and attended Dogan High School.

Uncle Wash joined the Army after high school where he traveled all over the world and enjoyed driving military trucks. After separating from the military, he spent time in the hospitality industry and officially joined the Nation of Islam in 1976, at which time he changed his name to Kasab El-Amin. After his time in the hospitality industry, Kasab worked for the United States Postal Service before committing to, and retiring from, the Northside Independent School District.

Kasab met his wife, Gloria, in San Antonio, Texas and married in July 11, 1972, a union that lasted almost 54 years. From this union they had six children, Lavay, Jamal, Shareba, Ahmad, Nadeem, and Aneesah.

Kasab loved money, dressing up in three-piece suits, Stacey Adams, classic cars, blues, BBQ, traveling, the beach, wrestling, smoking pipes, dominoes, football (every team except the Cowboys and the Giants), gin and tonic, Wash Johnson, his family, and the ladies. Although Kasab could not settle on one football team, he faithfully rooted for the Houston Texans. You could catch Kasab playing dominoes with anyone who had several hours to spare because he was not going to get up from the table unless he won. You would also catch Kasab singing and bobbing his head to the blues and talking smack to anyone who had skin tough enough to handle his playful ribbing.

Kasab’s love for traveling and enjoying scenery often lead to what should have been a four-hour trip from San Antonio to Fairfield taking over six hours. Kasab enjoyed driving to Gonzales to eat BBQ and spending time with his family at the beaches in Galveston and Corpus Christi, Texas. Kasab was full of life and humor until he took his final breath.

Kasab is now seated at the welcome table with his parents Will Johnson, Pinkie Kelly-Hatcher, and Wesley Hatcher, Sr.; his siblings Betty Lou Elix, Dorothy Marie Collins, RV Johnson, Baby Ruth Johnson, Wesley Hatcher, Jr. “Sugar Pie”, Annie Pearl Gray, Riley Hatcher, Richard Bruce Hatcher, Berta Mae Hatcher, Bonnie Hatcher, and Troy Lee Solomon; and his children Wash Johnson, Jr., Donald Johnson, and Shareba El-Amin-Tucker.

Kasab leaves to cherish his memories his beloved wife, Gloria; his loving children Aneesah El-Amin-Johnson (Timothy), Nadeem El-Amin (Annette), Ahmad El-Amin (Tamara), Jamal El-Amin, Lavay El-Amin (Lynn), Daniel Tucker, Charles Johnson (Daisy), Vernon Johnson, Franklin Johnson, Pinkie Omar, Leola Warner, Zelma Leonard-Moore, Marciel Leonard-Carson (Gary), and Linda Kay Griffin; his sisters Myrtle Alford, Martha Nero, Mary Lee James, Evelyn Bowie (Walter), Flower Jewel White, Bessie Nolen, Lela Fields, and Sarah McDade; brother-in-law Maceo Gray; sister-in-laws Georgia Smith and Evelyn Hazel; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
