November 26, 1949 ~ January 30, 2014
Deborah Joyce Haugan Stiles lost her valiant battle with ALS January 30, 2014. God took her peacefully as she slept.
Born November 26, 1949 to Harold and Nellie Haugan in Helena, MT. She grew up in Martinsdale, MT where she attended school in a 2-room schoolhouse. While attending high school in White Sulphur Springs, MT, Deb represented Meagher County as Centennial Queen in 1967. She went on to study nursing at Montana State University in Bozeman, later moving to Billings where she met and married Bob Stiles in 1984.
After marrying they moved to the Dallas area where Deb instantly became a Texan. After spending a few years in Dallas they moved to Houston and in 1990 moved to Alaska to work together with her husband on a coal-mining project. After 18 years in Alaska they returned home to Texas, settling in San Antonio to be close to family.
Shortly after moving to San Antonio, Deb converted to the Catholic faith and found a home in the Holy Spirit Catholic Church faith community. She was an active member of the A.C.T.S. community, Altar Society, the church choir, Life Beyond Divorce Ministry, and numerous Bible studies.
Deb enjoyed an active outdoor lifestyle as long as she was sporting the right outfit for the occasion. She enjoyed fishing, biking, hiking, canoeing, camping and hunting, even taking a near record black bear while living in Alaska.
Deb enjoyed training dogs and successfully competed in field trials and hunt tests with her beloved dog Coal who joined her in heaven the same day.
Deb will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her, especially by her husband of almost 30 years, Bob. She is survived by her sisters Kari (Mike) Ferguson, Nancy Edsall, brothers, Hal (Pat) Haugan and David Haugan, her Brother-in-law Doss Stiles and sisters-in-law Lisa Williams and Chris Rhodes. Stepchildren (who affectionately knew her as their "stepmonster") Cindy (Bradley) Silverstein, Wendy Stiles, Robert Stiles, III (Lori) and Scott (Marty) Stiles.
Her grandchildren who lovingly called her Grandebbie, Katie, John (Jillian) and Grace Blair, Samantha Silverstein, Ellen (Brandon) Brodbeck, Shelby and Jett Power, Rachel and Shane Cole, Ben and Sidney Stiles, Scotty and Annika Stiles. Nieces and nephews Barrett and Tanner Ferguson, Lindsay Gaasch, Ben and Evan Haugan, Christina Edsall, Sarah and Anna Haugan, Brandy Pounds and Lindsay David and Bryton Wolf and her favorite uncle Marvin Duncan.
A memorial rosary and mass will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church 758 West Ramsey, San Antonio, TX 78216 Monday February 3, at 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to San Antonio MDA or ALS Association South Texas.

Bob, We hit the jackpot with our spouses didn’t we? We were the lucky ones here on earth and they are the lucky ones who met God first. Deb is the only person I ever knew who didn’t have a kitchen junk drawer, so in her honor I shall organize mine ;) Sending Love, Resa , John and Nathan
Bob, Deb was so lucky to find you! You completed her, and made her a more well-rounded and happier person. I’m sure you feel that she did the same for you. I loved and respected Deb. She was a classy woman to the end. I will miss her. Roxanne
