Walter Eugene Johnson, Sr.

Walter Eugene Johnson Sr. was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 28, 2013. He was the second of eleven children born to the union of DeWitt and Lois (McClure) Johnson on December 22, 1929. He confessed Christ at an early age and united with the Providence Baptist Church in Gonzales, Texas. He Graduated from Edwards High School in Gonzales, and later enlisted in the United States Army. He worked at Kelly Air Force Base and Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas as a medic. Walter was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was lovingly known as "Little Brother" by his siblings, and PaPa by his grandchildren who he loved and adored and went above and beyond as a grandfather. He was known as "Dr.J" by his friends in the country where he enjoyed spending time telling stories. He is preceded in death by his parents DeWitt and Lois Johnson, three brothers and two sisters. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Doris of 46 years, daughter Deena Powell, son Walter Jr. (Betty) and grandchildren Brittany, Alexandria, Dominique, Faith and Isaiah; five sisters, Helen Cunningham (Robert) of San Antonio Texas, Laura Jo Brown of San Antonio, Texas , Juanita Washington of San Antonio, Texas, Elizabeth Steemer of Gonzales, Texas and Mary Louise Allen (A.B.) of Wharton, Texas, and a host of nephews, nieces and friends. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m., Monday, May 6, 2013 at the Meadowlawn Tribute Center. A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 7th at Lilly of the Valley Missionary Baptist Church.
