Wayne Nicholas Hoffman Sr. deployed for the last time on January 29, 2013 at the age of 82. He led a fulfilling 28 year career as a member of the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of Master Sargent. Wayne was twice awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the nation's fourth highest award for valor, the Meritorious Service Medal three times, the Air Medal twice, and three Accommodation medals. Wayne participated in campaigns in Korea and twice in Viet Nam with the 101st Airborne Division. He served in the Marshall Islands during the atomic bomb testing, Germany, Japan, and many locations throughout the United States. He began his military career as a military police officer and then moved into aircraft maintenance with the Army-Air Force and was one of the few enlisted men selected to fly both fixed wing and helicopters. He ended his army career at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. After leaving the military Wayne attended and received a degree from St Phillips College in mechanical/engineering technologies, after which he served the next 20 years as Director of Environmental Services for the Morningside Manor ministries at the Chandler Memorial Nursing Home. He was a man with a strong sense of duty and dedication. He was committed to his family and had a special compassion for animals. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed country music. Wayne is survived by his wife, five children, twelve grand-children, fifteen great grand-children, and one great-great grand-child. He was truly loved and will be missed.
