October 14, 1933 ~ February 9, 2010

Cecilia Rose Shields, age 76, died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on February 9, 2010. Born on October 14, 1933, to Simon and Amelia Gallardo Calzoncit, she was a lifetime resident of San Antonio. A devout Catholic, Cecilia graduated from Saint Mary's High School in downtown San Antonio which has since closed. All four of her children attended St. Luke's Church and elementary school, and the entire family was an active part of the St. Luke's parish for many years. She will be remembered for her deep love and devotion to God and her family, her generosity to those in need and her love of reading. She took great joy throughout her life in watching her children and grandchildren grow up, and seldom missed a sporting event or school event involving any one of them. Memories of her warm smile and graceful manner will serve to sustain us in the grief of our deep loss of our wife, mother and grandmother. Cecilia is survived by her beloved husband of fifty years, Roy Lee Shields, Jr., and her four devoted children; daughter Debi Anderson and her husband, Keith; son Chris Shields and his wife, Susie; daughter Sandi Mora and her husband, Robert; and son Trey Shields and his wife, Michelle. She is also survived by her ten grandchildren; Ryan, Kristen and Tyler Mora; Kelsey and Kevin Shields; Lexi, Royce and Tanner Shields; Brian and Mark Anderson; as well as her great grandchildren; Brandon, Jacob and Mason Mora; Branden, Kyle, Emily Sarah, Madison and Ryan Anderson; and great-great grandchild Tucker Anderson. Other loving relatives include her brother, Bobby Calzoncit; sisters-in-law Lucy Calzoncit, Helen Shields and Mildred Croft; and her life-long best friend and first cousin, Theresa Garcia. Many nieces and nephews also survive Cecilia with fond memories of their special aunt. She is preceded in death by both of her parents and her brother David Calzoncit. A memorial mass and remembrance for immediate family will be held at 1:00p.m., Saturday, February 13, 2010 in St. Anthony Chapel at the Franciscan community of Villa de San Antonio. The family wishes to express its deepest appreciation to Hortense Cunningham and the exceptional care and dedication of Dr. Frank Mueller and his loving staff. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Cecilia's name can be made to the St. Anthony Chapel, Villa de San Antonio, located at 8103 North Hollow, San Antonio, Texas 78240.

Guestbook

  1. My condolences to the Shields family, especially to my St. Luke’s School friends, Sandi and Robert Mora. – Erick.

  2. Your mother will long be remembered for her gentle spirit and kind words. She was so gracious to our daughter Susie when she came into your family, telling her that she had waited all Chris’ life for her. Although we know you will all miss your mother, she leaves behind a wonderful legacy in her children and grandchildren. With loving thoughts and prayers to each of you, Mike & Mary Pinson

  3. After the death of his very close friend Lazarus Jesus gave way to tears. (John11:35) The grief experienced by family and friends in connection with death does bring tears, so I would like to extend my sympathy for your loss, even though I didn’t know Cecelia, but My family are presently grieving the loss of my niece, so I felt the need to share a thought from the Bible with another family. (John 11:24,25 Isaiah 25:8.) It is my wish that you will find comfort and hope in God’s promises for the future.

  4. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family in this time of earthly loss. Heaven has gained a beautiful spirit.

  5. From Perth WA >> I looked up my heritage and found Celia Shields as a relative of John Perejuan my great grandfather and am bereaved at her passing.

    Jan Perejuan.
