Esther Ruth Davis

esther davis
Esther Ruth Johnson Davis was called home to be with our Lord on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at the age of 91. She was the only child of Esther Pearl and Walter Johnson. Ruth is predeceased by her parents and her husband, J. J. "Pinky" Davis who was the love of her life for 59 years. Ruth is lovingly remembered by her son, Guy Davis, his wife, Meli, of Sulphur, LA, Denise Davis of San Antonio, Tx, Michael Davis of Alice, Tx, granddaughter, Jennifer Davis Zapata, her husband, Gabe, and great grandchildren, Cody and Katy of San Angelo, TX, cousins and countless friends considered family. Ruth was born in Jacksboro, Texas on December 3, 1924. She grew up and attended school in Driscoll, Texas and was a proud "Driscoll Dragon". When her father moved the family to Robstown, Texas, to start his business, Walter Johnson Lumber Company, she attended and graduated from Robstown High School home of football and baseball teams Cotton Pickers! She attended one year at Texas A & I University in Kingsville, Tx. She worked as a clerk for Tower Pharmacy in Corpus Christi, Texas and one of her duties was typing Rx labels for the prescription bottles. "She joked that it was so hard to get those bottles in the typewriter!" After Ruth and Pinky met at Rob's Dancehall in Robstown, Texas they dated for a short time and were married on May 4, 1951, at her parent's home in Robstown, Texas. Best friends, Claude and Twig Denton attended and the story goes "Claude held Pinky so Ruth could marry him"! A reception was held at King's Inn Restaurant on Baffin Bay which quickly became the place for our family to gather for special celebrations. They moved to Alice, Texas in 1951 to raise their family. She was a bookkeeper for Tommy Donald and Mr. Powell, CPA's. She was devoted to her family and loved when everyone came to visit! She and Pinky loved playing golf and would organize Scotch foursomes and play in tournaments at the Alice Country Club. She had many friends and enjoyed playing bridge and dominoes, traveling to Mexico to shop, crocheting baby blankets and afghans, growing flowers and plants, and loving her many puppy dogs. She often would visit the animal shelters in the area to rescue stray dogs and try to find a good home for them; however, they normally became part of the Davis household. Her tradition continues today with her children and grandchildren loving and caring for animals. There were lots of laughter and love and many family celebrations over the years giving us fond memories of our Mother. In May, 2010, Ruth and Pinky moved to San Antonio to be near their daughter. She resided at Huebner Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center making friends and participating in activities -- bingo, crafts and games, birthday parties, holiday and music events, and Sunday church services. She always wanted to look her best every day and would apply makeup and lipstick, asking the aides to help style her hair and choose her clothes and accessories. She would greet residents and staff with a wave or a handshake as she went down the hallway! The family would like to thank the staff of Huebner Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, the doctors, nurses and healthcare team of Methodist Hospital and VITAS Hospice for their compassion and loving care. Please join the family as we celebrate her life and share memories of good times and laughter this Saturday, February 13, 2016, @ 3:00 pm, Meadowlawn Funeral Home, 5611 E. Houston Street, San Antonio, TX 78220. The family will receive visitors in the Chapel @ 2:15 pm. Ruth's favorite color was pink. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I was blessed to care for my Mother the last 5 years at Huebner Creek Health & Rehabilitation Center in San Antonio,TX. She made many friends with residents and staff who loved her like family. She enjoyed music, arts & crafts, holiday events, bingo, and going out for monthly luncheons. I loved attending Sunday services with her singing the beautiful hymns our family learned attending church. We would go outside to enjoy the courtyard gazebo admiring their pink and red roses, watching the birds and seeing the squirrels play and feel the warmth of the sunshine. Her strength, love of life, teasing and laughter will be missed greatly. Mother, I love you and rejoice the day we are together again in glory.

  2. When I think of Aunt Ruth, a grin naturally shows up. She had such a love for life…..her husband, children, grands and anyone that would walk in the door. As a young girl, I remember walking in that door and there would always be something yummy to eat. She introduced Italian Cream cake to my husband and 3 children a long time ago. But it was not just cake, it was lots and lots of food that was always ready to be served. She and Uncle Jean “Pinky” had an open door policy. You never felt like you intruded, or interrupted their life. In the latter years, when we would visit her at Huebner Creek Nursing and Rehab. Center, she knew everybody by name, waving and commenting. She was one fine lady; honoring others, and also putting in her two cents on any topic. She made me laugh, because there was no such thing as ignoring “the elephant in the room”. Her love for plants and puppies is an indelible memory for our children. She loved our kids and grandkids affectionately even though we only saw each other occasionally. I thank God for this woman. She was a feisty

    difference-maker.
