Mother Doris Maxine Walter was born march 20, 1939 in Troy, Texas to Clarence Thorns, Sr., and Beatrice Hordrick. She attended and graduated from the Troy Independent School District, and soon after received her Nursing degree from Paul Quinn College. As an educated young lady, Maxine advanced through her career while maturing into a strong woman of determination, perserverance and gentleness. In 1971, on her birthday, she united with Mr. Archie B. Walter, Sr. To this loving marriage three children were born - Archie, Jr., Andrea and Audie. As a devoted wife and loving mother, Mrs. Walter always put her family at the forefront. Obtaining a passion for sewing, gardening and cooking - she kept her farm home well, supported her husband's company, all while continuing her career as a Nurse at the Downtown Baptist Hospital in San Antonio and in the Home Health Care Industry. Accepting Christ at a young age, she joined Childress Memorial Church of God In Christ under the leadershkip of the late Bishop T.D. Iglehart. Mother Walter loved the Lord, her church family and the ministry of Childress. In her earlier years she served in the Hospitality Department, Women's Department, Christian Women's Council, Youth Ministries and many other areas. She was a sweet, peaceful woman who said few words, but meant what she said. Her generosity was extended to all, however she had a special love for her children's friends and the young people. It was not uncommon for the Walter home to be filled with 15-20 Childress Youth riding horses, feeding chickens and feasting on one of Mother Walter's delicious Sunday spreads. In additon, she and Deacon Walter graciously opened their home for annual church holiday picnics. As years progressed, Mother Walter continued her faithful service unto God and her current beloved Pastor, Bishop Samuel E. Iglehart. She became president of the Home & Foreign Missions Department, helping to support San Antonio citizens and those in need abroad. She also served vital membership roles on the Mothers Board, Ministers & Deacons Wives and as an Elect Lady, aiding with the preparation of Holy Communion. Mother Walter did not miss a Sunday, and served her Savior and church with tremendous dedication until her death. The epitome of grace and love, Mother Walter gently touched the hearts of many. On Wednesday, September 7, 2011, Mother Doris Maxine Walter peacefully stepped from this life to life eternal. Remaining to cherish her life is her devoted husband of more than 40 years, Deacon Archie Walter, Sr.; three children, Archie Walter, Jr., Andrea Matney (Marshall), and Audie DeShawn Walter; two stepdaughters, Helen Garcia (Tony) and Marilyn Walter; six granchildren, Tristain (deceased), Taylor, Russell, Denee, Mikaila, Brandy and Stacey; one brother, Charles Thorns; two Godchildren, Derick Keith Paterson and Ada Joyce Robertson; and a host of other relatives, church family, friends and loved ones.
