Born on September 24, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas, to Clifton R. Steen and Silvia “Sally” Steen, Bertha Mae lived a life of quiet strength, devotion, and unwavering love for her family and community. A proud graduate of Phyllis Wheatley High School, Class of 1962, Bertha Mae pursued her calling in healthcare and became a Licensed Vocational Nurse in 1963. That same year, she began her lifelong career with the Methodist Healthcare System, where she served faithfully for 46 years, touching countless lives with her compassion, excellence, and gentle spirit until her retirement in 2009. On September 18, 1965, she married the love of her life, Mr. Benny Lee Smith. Their union endured for 54 beautiful years, filled with faith, commitment, and partnership, until his passing in 2019. Together, they built a home rooted in family, love, and resilience. Their marriage blessed them with two sons: • Daryl Wayne Smith Sr. • Michael Paul Smith Sr., who preceded her in death. Bertha Mae’s legacy continues through her beloved grandchildren: Daryl Wayne Smith Jr., Daesha Smith, Ziann Smith, Anissia Smith, Alexis Smith, Alyssa Smith, Michael Paul Smith Jr., and Sean Smith, as well as her three great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immeasurable joy. She will be remembered for her nurturing heart, her steadfast work ethic, and the way she cared for others both inside and outside the hospital walls. Her life was a testament to service, family, and quiet faith — and her memory will remain a guiding light to all who knew and loved her.
