December 29, 1922 ~ January 24, 2016
Crystavell (Morrison) Cunningham was born to Beddie Morrison and Luberta Berry Morrison on December 29, 1922 in Hope (Hempstead County) Arkansas. She was the third born of eight children, all who have preceded her in death. Crystavell married the late Elzie Michael in 1943 and moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas. In 1946 she earned her cosmetology certificate from Jefferson-Collingworth's Beauty School in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. In 1948, Fort Sam Houston brought the family to San Antonio, Texas, where she raised her four children. Over the years, she worked as a beautician and did domestic services. In retirement, she remained active in supporting her church, community and others. Crystavell accepted Christ at an early age since both her parents were preachers in the Church of God in Christ. In San Antonio, she was baptized at New Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and later became an active member of New Hope Baptist Church. She was a God loving and God fearing Christian woman. She was devoted to her Christian faith, in addition to a love for "Bingo" with friends. On March 21, 2010, at New Hope's 99th anniversary, she was recognized with the "Seasoned Saint" awardfor Running this race with Grace. She proudly displayed this recognition in her home for all to see. In 2003, Crystavell was honored by her children and nephew at the Ensemble Theatre's Mother's Day Program in Houston, Texas. This tribute summarized the person and mother she was to so many, and the values she instilled on anyone who came in contact with her. On December 29, 2015, she celebrated her 93rd birthday with family and friends. She was loved by many, and on the morning of January 24, 2016, God reminded us that he loved her more and called her home. She leaves to rejoice her life, her children: Sharon M. Owens (Douglas) Missouri City, Texas; Elzie Michael, Jr., devoted caregiver and sonSan Antonio; James OtisMemphis, Tennessee; Sadie JoAnnAustin; and Jerry Williams (Lou)San Antonio and her grandchildren: Tobi Myretta Childress (JC), Courtney J.
