September 28, 1927 ~ November 3, 2015
Eva Vela Reyes born September 28, 1927, went to be with the Lord on November 3, 2015. She was born in San Antonio, Texas to Emilia and Candelario Vela. She lived in Somerset and San Antonio, Texas before settling down the last 53 years in Atascosa, Texas.
Eva was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Paul Reyes, Jr. She is survived by her children: Mary E. Giffith (Roddy), Pauline Sanders (Bobby), Helen Reyes, Rodney Paul Reyes, Daniel Reyes and Brenda Guillen. Grandchildren: Elke Simmons-Lara (Mark), Monica Trevino, Bobby Sanders Jr. (Veronica) and Great Grandchildren: Bobby James III, Adam Michael, Ashley, Adrian and Avery.
In her early married life, she concentrated her life to raising her five children. She was an active P.T.A. and P.T.S.A. member for 27 years. She was a Band Parents Club member for 4 years. She was a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher because of her love for children. She was a cook and baker at Southwest High School and Sky Harbor Elementary for 8 years.
She taught Adult Bilingual and G.E.D. classes at Rector Memorial Methodist Church and also volunteered at their food pantry. She also worked at the Wesley U.M.C. Center and also worked with migrant students at Southwest Elementary.
She was civic minded in her community and had held positions as election judge and clerk at various levels. She was the Worthy Matron of the Amistad Chapter of the Eastern Star in San Antonio, Texas.
She loved to cook for her family and her Thanksgiving and Christmas meals are memorable. She loved to sew and taught her daughters how to quilt their own blankets.
Eva and her husband attended various Baptist churches in Somerset, Lytle, Pearsall and San Antonio, Texas where she enjoyed singing in all the choirs.
Her hobbies included: reading the Bible, going out to eat, and enjoying her one true passion, music.
Eva touched the lives of many with her gently kind spirit and generosity. She worked hard to provide for her family and made sure they received the best education they could.
She was a sweet soul and loving mother, wife and friend who will truly be missed. Her strong faith in God made her the woman she was. She was a friend to everyone she met.
