Born in San Antonio, Texas, Evelyn Marie Woodson Lockett was a radiant soul whose life was a testimony of love, strength, and unwavering dedication to her family. She was the cherished daughter of Ceola Johnson and James Austin Johnson, and the beloved wife of Raymond Lockett, with whom she shared 59 beautiful years of love and 53 of those in marriage.
Evelyn was a devoted mother to two daughters, Eldest Temika son in law (Terence Byrant), Youngest Raquel son in law( Donte Peoples), and a proud grandmother to Tamia, Tamira, Dyshai, Tamisha, Dontaysia, Tianni, and Deontay. Her legacy continues through ten great-grandchildren, each blessed to carry a piece of her light within them.
She was one of eight siblings, a loving sister to Betty, Patricia, Beverly, Terri, James, Charles, and the late Kenneth Wayne Johnson. Evelyn was preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Darnell Peoples, her parents (Austin and Ceola), and her brother Kenneth.
Though trained and skilled as a medical assistant, Family childcare provider, and homemaker, Evelyn ultimately chose to pour her life into what she valued most, her family. She laid down her career to serve as a full-time wife, mother, grandmother, and caregiver. She carried these roles with grace, humor, and a selfless heart.
To know Evelyn was to be wrapped in warmth. She spent her time crocheting, collecting blankets, and shopping. She enjoyed the little things that made her happy. She loved music and dancing, and for many years, she never missed a Sunday morning in church. Her faith was strong, and her presence brought comfort and light to everyone around her.
Even when life became harder, Evelyn never stopped showing up for the people she loved. We will always remember going over to Evelyn’s house and seeing her in the kitchen with her morning coffee, dancing to “The Temptations” or outside with her husband enjoying the sun. She still loved going on rides and finding joy in simple moments.
She fought quietly, gently, and consistently for her family, for love, and peace.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her through the traditions she passed down, the prayers she prayed, and the unconditional love she gave so freely. She was truly one of a kind, a queen, a nurturer, a treasure.
As we say goodbye, we take comfort knowing she is resting in eternal peace, surrounded by the glory of her Heavenly Father. Though she is no longer with us in the physical, her spirit and legacy will live in the light we will carry for generations to come.
Forever In Our Hearts.
