Gerald H. Griffin,Jr.

gerald griffin,jr.
Gerald Henry Griffin, Jr. aslso known as GG, Dad, and Papa began his life journey born to his parents, Carrie A. and Gerald Henry Griffin, Sr. on May 12, 1934 in San Antonio, Texas. Gerald Griffin "GG" at a young age became an outstanding 3-star athlete, basketball, football and track. Now don't think he wasn't good at other sports, these were just a few of his favorites. Although he worked a lot, he found time for activities outside of work, especially after retirement. Gerald, a proud alumnus, at one-time served as Vice President for the Wheatley Class of ’52. He also was a member of the American Legion for 25 years, serving as Commander for 8 years; at various times throughout the years, you might even find him bartending or deejaying. Gerald for many years served on various boards at Macedonia Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend R.L. Franklin. His stature, yet quiet demeanor fooled many; well let us say some. His children, niece, and nephew, which he dearly loved in his own way, understood that Dad/Uncle GG/Papa was a no-nonsense man. A man of few words, but when he spoke it was like E.F Hutton—we all listened. His goal was not to tell us how to live, but that we’d identify lessons learned through his work ethics, integrity, and generosity. Gerald leaves behind one son Ronald Ballard, (Fay Ballard) three daughters; Portia Reitzell, Gerri Griffin Buhl (Carl Buhl Jr), and Gezette Griffin; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews, friends and extended family. Gerald was one of a kind and touched many hearts. He was very handsome, a class act with a sternness that kept us in line, but with memories of a lifetime. He leaves a legacy of discipline, integrity, and a generous heart. God was ready to call his angel home as his work on earth had been finished. He will forever be in our hearts.

  2. GG was our Mothers Phyliss Wheatley Alumni and Classmate. He lived a half of a block down, from the back part of our house. You can find GG on his front porch. He would always wave when he saw us, or when we pass by going to HEB or Walgreens. On a hot summer day! He would always offer you a cold drink of a Coke. We knew his father in law Marvin Reddin better known as Bubba! Our relationship had gotten stronger just by all the visits with one another;”Through the Phyllis Wheatley Alumni Association that our late Mother was apart of. He will be missed.
