December 20, 1926 ~ December 11, 2015
James Maitland Rutledge was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas on December 20, 1926 to Carl Daniel & Margaret Maitland Rutledge and went to his Heavenly home on December 11, 2015. He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother Carl D. Rutledge Jr. who was KIA in WWII. Maitland graduated from Pine Bluff High School in 1944 and enlisted with the Navy at 17 completing 2 years of service before attending The University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and securing a BBA in 1950 from its business school. While there, Maitland was a standout student and held officer positions in the IFC and Kappa Sigma fraternity. At the University, he met the love of his life, Marian Pugh Rutledge, who he married May 10, 1951. He subsequently accepted employment with The Group Division of Aetna Life & Casualty. Maitland returned to active duty Fall 1950 with the U.S. Army, joined the 2nd Armored Division as 1st Lt. and was stationed in Germany until Fall 1952 when he resumed his employment with Aetna. Maitland was a successful business man in the insurance industry displaying the highest level of ethics. With Aetna, he & Marian made stops in Shreveport, LA and Houston, Texas and then to San Antonio, Texas in 1961 to head the Group Benefits Division of Aetna from 1961 to 1983. Maitland was a smart, outgoing, caring, humble, patient and generous man who was always quick to extend his hand in friendship. Maitland took early retirement from Aetna as a benefits consultant from 1984 to 1994 when he sold his business book to Alexander & Alexander to begin full retirement and enjoy his life with Marian as well as to travel, play more tennis and spend time with his family & his new grandson, James Maitland Rutledge, III aka "The Big Fine Boy". Maitland was a "Southern Gentleman" with a servant's heart and a heart for God. As an active member of First Presbyterian Church since 1961, Maitland served as a Youth Teacher, Deacon, Elder and was a Director of FPC's Downtown Day Care as well as Morningside Ministries. Maitland was actively involved with numerous civic organizations in leadership roles including Mission Road. Maitland was proud of his Scottish heritage and compiled significant information of his family lineage over his life. Maitland was also a "die-hard" Arkansas Razorback fan and stayed in touch with old friends and family from "back home" to regularly discuss the progress and prospects of its teams. He also loved his regular annual Spring trips with Marian to the horse races at Oaklawn in Hot Springs, Arkansas while sharing laughter, memories and great times there with family, his brothers and sisters-in-law as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Maitland was an avid tennis player for decades. He and Marian developed an extended close family of tennis players spanning over 4 decades and were among the original members inducted into the San Antonio Country Club Tennis Honor Roll recognizing their contributions to the promotion and development of tennis programs at SACC. Maitland had very special friends who he loved to play tennis with over the years in Leagues and particularly with his regular Tuesday and Thursday tennis groups. Maitland was a member of the Town Club, The Argyle and The San Antonio Country Club. Maitland was a wonderful husband and father. The love and care he showed for Marian was a model for all men and his children. The love and instruction he provided to his children and grandson will be a legacy for generations. Maitland lived a full and grand mortal life and was warmly welcomed by our Father in heaven. Maitland is survived by his wife, Marian P. Rutledge, daughter, Ann Jacqueline Rutledge, son and daughter-in-law, James Maitland Rutledge, Jr. and Kerry Rutledge, and grandson, James Maitland Rutledge, III. In addition, Brother & Sister in Law Mr. & Mrs. Iddo Enochs, Sister in Law Mrs. George Pine and numerous nieces and nephews. Dear Marian, children and grandchildren, we are sad for the passing of Mr. Rutledge. We will always remember him as a friendly and very kind neighbor. There is no doubt that he is in Heaven. God bless you all.
I am so sorry for your loss. Please accept my condolences.
When we are grieving the loss of a loved one, especially during this time of year, we can find comfort from the scriptures. I found a couple scriptures at jw.org.
Psalm 55:22 promises that God will sustain us if we just throw our burdens on him. So we need to remember to pray.
I look forward to seeing Mr. Rutledge in the resurrection when he will again be enjoying friends/family. (John 5:28,29).
I hope these scriptures bring you as much comfort as they bring me.
Dear Marian and family, We are very sorry for your loss and the one of our community. Please accept our condoléances and be ensured our door will always be open for you. Sincerely your Sabine, Simon and family.
