Janet E. Haskins

Mrs. Janet Eulalee Haskins was born in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies to Sydney and Agnes Scott. Janet at a young age was taught an indelible sense of hard work, stewardship, faith and love for family and others she encountered. She often referred to friends as family.  

Janet and Charles met each other while he was stationed in England. They fell in love and married on March 28, 1959, 66.5 years ago. Janet and Charles raised their two children, Sharon and Michael by emphasizing God, education, and hard work.  

In 1966, Janet and her children became members of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. The family relocated to Germany and upon their return to San Antonio in 1973 she gracefully embraced her church family as well.  

As a member of St. Philip’s, Janet served in many capacities: Chairperson for Teen Safe and Recreation; taught Sunday School, was a choir member, assisted with numerous fundraising efforts, engaged in Summer reading programs for the children, served on the Alter Guild, received the Outstanding Christian Stewardship Award, member of the Daughters of the King (an order dedicated to prayer and worship), visited the infirmed to bridge faith and understanding for those that could not attend church and as a result brought hope and a continuation of their love for Christ.  

Janet also started the Annual Prayer Breakfast at the Church, took training with the Disciples of Christ in Community at the University of Sewanee and became one of the facilitators with the city of San Antonio. She participated in the Women’s Bible Study and was elected to the Vestry of St. Philip’s Church 1999 and in June 2001 was the first woman appointed as a Senior Warden at St. Philips Church by the former Rector Reverend Dee W. Bright.  

In 1993, she and her husband, Charles, participated in Curcillo to further enhance their Christian journey as husband and wife. In memory of their son, Micheal Ray (pre-deceased), Janet and Charles donated Building #3 for Godly play for the children of St. Philip’s. This building now serves as the Church Thrift Shop. Janet embraced the idea because she felt like it was a “gift that kept on giving”. Her relentless spirit, tenacity and heartfelt commitment never ceased, and Janet became President of the Women’s Club where she sponsored trips to the San Antonio Food Bank and Church outings to Fredericksburg. In 2016, she started and sponsored and English style Tea Party which was very well received by the women of St. Philips Church.  

Janet never ceased to tire and continued to find ways to enhance her knowledge and graduated UTSA in 1983, magna cum laude attaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. Her dedication to children took her to the classroom where she taught for 18 years. After retirement in 2001, Janet continued to work for the State of Texas, which culminated in a total of 21 years preparing the children of Texas for a love of learning. As an educator and love for teaching, Janet always felt that “no child should be left behind”. Because of her love for teaching children and her illustrious zest for the classroom, Janet received the Christa McAuliffe Award for embodying the love of teaching science to her beloved students, Teacher of the year, Science Teacher Award and was an education workshop leader across the USA. She was also inducted into the Educator’s Hall of Fame sponsored by National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa—Gamma Tau Chapter.  

Her outside community work continued at times with her beloved husband, Charles, and vice versa. She would often say “we are two peas in a pod”, she served as the committee co-chair, volunteering alongside her husband Charles on the Habitat for Humanity Family Selection Committee. For four years, she tirelessly assisted her husband Charles on the 4^th Saturday of each month to provide lunch for Habitat workers. She also assisted him with the Greater Kiwanis Club Christmas shopping for disadvantaged young people in and around the San Antonio Community and assisted him with Wreaths Across America for several years. She was also a member of the Red Hats Society. Janet became a member of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. in 2010 presented to her by State Representative Ruth Jones McClennan. 

Janet’s profound appetite to learn and impart her knowledge to help others took her and her husband to 29 different countries across the globe, never missing a step with her grandchildren and great grandchildren baking, cooking, sending books, recipes in the mail, helping with their care was never limited likewise with her friends that she loved dearly. Notably, one of Janet’s favorite trips was in 2011 when she and her Charles took their great granddaughter Kenedi to Israel. Another mission trip both she and her beloved Charles took was to Nakuru, Kenya in 1995 to help with building a church and spreading the word of the Gospel. While in Kenya, Janet taught English to the Kikuya tribe. Janet always wanted to help and give in whatever capacity she could.  

Janet is survived by her husband of over 66 years, Charles Haskins; her daughter, Sharon Harry; granddaughters, Nicole Rice and Toiya Facey (Damian); great grandchildren, Kenedi Facey, Dylan Rice, Brice Facey, Eden Facey and Bennett Facey; siblings Rita Sinclair, Norman F. Scott and Norman Scott and a host of nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.  

Janet is preceded in death by her parents, Sydney and Agnes Scott; son, Michael Haskins and siblings, Milicent Rose, Lytton Scott, Norris Scott, Barbara Scott, Pamela Scott, and Sydney N. Scott
