Jerry "Coach" Dosser

jerry dosser
Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame recipient, Jerry Dosser, went peacefully with the Lord on March 26, 2013. He passed away from complications with his heart and cancer. He graduated from Brackenridge HS in 1951 and after serving in the U.S. Air Force, returned to graduate from Trinity University in 1959. That year his coaching career began at Rhodes Jr HS and in 1963 he moved to Edison HS where he remained until his retirement in 1985. He became the head baseball coach at Edison in 1966 and served in that capacity for 16 years, a tenure that at the time of his retirement was unsurpassed by any other baseball coach in the history of the San Antonio ISD. Known for his ability to teach the game of baseball, he coached three of his successors at Edison as well as numerous other coaches around the state. In appointing Dosser as Edison's first baseball coach, Athletic Director Barry Ehlert commissioned him to start what he was lead to believe would be an intramural program. With no assistant coach, no JV program, and no on-campus baseball facility he soon brought this "intramural" program to the U.I.L. playoffs. In his own words, his career "centered around family, school and community" and for that he will long be remembered. He loved baseball, football, dancing, golf and fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Dosser. Family members include son Jerry Dosser and his wife Deanna Dosser, daughter Sheryl Dosser Cook and her husband Tom Cook, granddaughter Charity Walker and her husband David Walker, granddaughter Stephanie Dosser and her fianc Joshua Sypert and granddaughters Morgan and Lindsey McGuire. Great granddaughters are Danielle and Maggie Walker. A Life Celebration will be held in his honor on Saturday, April 20th at 10:00AM in the Edison HS gym on 701 Santa Monica Street for family and friends.

  1. Coach Dosser was a great man of integrity and fairnesss. In football, we were proud to be part of his defensive secondary group. He cared about the individual and our academic success as well as sucess on the field. Even though we were often outsized by the competition, we were never outplayed or gave up because of him. I was lucky enough to be coached by him in both football and baseball. Of all the teachers and coaches through the years, Coach Dosser stands out above the rest for his love of the game and passion he instilled in his players.

  2. Coach Dosser was as tough as you could find. The thing I remember the most is that he did it his way and who could argue with his success. I was fortunate to have played baseball for him and the only thing I would trade where those “two hundreds” that we ran about 3 times a week as the sun went down over the bill Millers sign to the west!!!

  3. Coach Dosser was a wonderful man and really good coach. He helped me learn baseball at another level. He believed that each of us could always do better and challenged us to do so.

Enjoyed baseball and our Golden Bear team.

Proud to have played under him.

    Regards,

Coach Dosser was an inspiration to us all. He was a friend as well as a mentor. It was an honor to have played for him.

  5. My brother and I have really enjoyed these comments and all the wonderful stories we are hearing from so many friends and students. It has really touched our hearts and has helped us through this difficult time. Dad “Coach” really found happiness in coaching and being around his students and players. Thank you again for all the kind words and the fun stories!

  6. Coach Dosser not only inspired his players but as a cheerleader he always

made time to talk to us while we practiced after school drills. Giving us much

Encouragement! He will always have a place in my heart. Our prayers are with his family!
