It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our cherished father, Johnny Cortinas Cruz, Sr., who gracefully departed from us on October 27, 2024, at the age of 71. Born on March 15, 1953, in San Antonio, Texas, he was the embodiment of love, resilience, and unwavering strength.
Throughout his life, Johnny was a source of inspiration to those fortunate enough to know him. He was the proud father of Samantha (Arthur) Carreon, Johnny (Kayla) Cruz, Jr., Michael (Dafne) Cruz, and Luis (Nina) Cruz, who will forever hold dear the invaluable lessons he imparted and the unwavering support he provided. His children remember him not just as a parent but as a mentor and friend who cheered them on in every endeavor and celebrated their achievements, big and small.
Johnny was a remarkable friend and colleague, known for his friendship and jokes. His work was more than just a career; it was a reflection of his commitment to serving others and making a positive difference in the community. Known to his coworkers as “JC,” they often spoke of his kindness, work ethic, and humor, which brightened even the most challenging days.
A man of many interests, Johnny, had a passion for many different things. He enjoyed playing the lottery, going to bingo, and spending time with his granddaughter, Charlie, and his grandson, Oliver. Weekends would often find him working on his chicken coop, tending to his comic book collection, or just lounging around with his companion pet, “Wolfie”, where he found peace and joy. His love for music (especially Frankie Valli, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and countless others) often turned into shared experiences with family and friends, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
He was active in the lives of his family, where he made countless memories and positively impacted their lives in many ways. His generous spirit and willingness to lend a helping hand were evident in everything he did.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Emilio and Beatrice Cruz, his wife, Maricela Garza Cruz (who was the love of his life), and his brother Joseph Cruz, who have surely welcomed him into Heaven with open arms. He is survived by his loving family, including his children, grandchildren, sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Johnny’s life will take place on Monday, November 4, 2024 at MeadowLawn Funeral Home beginning at 4:00 p.m. We invite all who knew him to join us in sharing stories, laughter, and tears as we honor his memory. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to an animal charity of your choice, reflecting his lifelong commitment to saving the lives of stray animals.
While Johnny may no longer walk among us, his spirit will remain alive in the hearts of all who loved him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering support that will continue to inspire us. May he rest in eternal peace.
