Jorge Canavati

It is with deep sadness that we honor the life and memory of Jorge Canavati, age 69, of San Antonio, Texas, who passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026 surrounded by his family and jazz music.

Jorge was born on January 10, 1957, in Saltillo, Mexico, to Carmen Miguel and Jorge Negib Canavati. As the eldest of five children, he spent his early years in Forest Hills, New York, where his lifelong love of music began at the age of three. Those years were filled with curiosity, mischief, and cherished memories with his childhood friend, Nick. At the age of 13, Jorge’s family returned to Mexico City, where he would later meet the love of his life, Daisy, whom he married in 1983.

His professional journey eventually brought them to Houston, Texas, through the coffee industry, where he began a distinguished career in trade and logistics with the Port of Houston. Houston is also where Jorge and Daisy built their family and laid the foundation for a life filled with love and purpose.

Jorge was a true expert in his field, dedicating his career to helping people and businesses move goods across the globe, with a special focus on Latin America. He distinguished himself as an independent, innovative thinker serving in numerous leadership and advisory roles. His contributions have been recognized with honors by a variety of organizations including the U.S. Department of Commerce and the State of Texas. 

With more than 35 years of experience in global trade and logistics, Jorge became a respected leader in his field. He eventually moved his family to San Antonio, TX with the Port of San Antonio and later founded J. Canavati & Co. LLC, an international logistics and trade consulting firm. He was the immediate past chair of the Global Chamber San Antonio and held executive leadership positions with the National Importers and Exporters Association of Mexico (ANIERM) in North America. He was appointed to the Camino Real District Export Council by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and served on multiple boards, including the San Antonio-Mexico Friendship Council and the San Antonio Council for International Visitors. 

He was also a passionate educator and mentor, lecturing at universities and international forums and serving as an invited lecturer at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, where he taught energy logistics.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jorge’s passions defined him just as deeply. He had a profound love for music, especially jazz, as well as for barbecue, art, animals, reading, and without fail – dark humor. After settling in San Antonio, he found a meaningful way to share his love of music by volunteering at Trinity University’s KRTU 91.7 FM. There, and with the support of JJ Lopez and Ron Nirenburg, he created and hosted Jazz de México, a program that grew into a globally recognized showcase for Mexican jazz artists. On most days, he could be found on his patio, enjoying jazz, smoking a cigar, and savoring the simple pleasures of life—often alongside his famously delicious pork ribs and brisket seasoned with his award winning rub, Kay Brown’s. Above all else, Jorge was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and his family remained the center of his life.

Jorge was preceded in death by his parents, Jorge and Carmen, and his sister Sylvia.

He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 43 years, Daisy; his daughter, Gabriela; his son, Jorge; his daughter-in-law, Michelle; his two beloved grandchildren; his furry companion Lucy; his brother, Gerardo; his sisters, Carmen and Beatriz; and countless nieces, nephews, colleagues, jazz artists, and dear friends whose lives he touched.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 1, 2026, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas on 20523 Huebner Rd.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Jorge’s memory to KRTU, the American Cancer Society, the ACLU, the Humane Society, or the Society of St. Vincent de Paul – all organizations Jorge believed in and donated to monthly.

Jorge nació el 10 de enero de 1957 en Saltillo, México, hijo de Carmen Miguel y Jorge Negib Canavati. Como el mayor de cinco hermanos, pasó sus primeros años en Forest Hills, Nueva York, donde comenzó su amor por la música a la edad de tres años. Aquellos años estuvieron llenos de curiosidad, travesuras y recuerdos entrañables con su amigo de la infancia, Nick. A los 13 años, su familia regresó a la Ciudad de México, donde más tarde conocería al amor de su vida, Daisy, con quien se casó en 1983.

Su trayectoria profesional los llevó eventualmente a Houston, Texas, a través de la industria del café, donde inició una destacada carrera en comercio y logística con el Puerto de Houston. En Houston también fue donde Jorge y Daisy formaron su familia y sentaron las bases de una vida llena de amor y propósito.

Jorge fue un verdadero experto en su campo, dedicando su carrera a ayudar a personas y empresas a mover mercancías a nivel global, con un enfoque especial en América Latina. Se distinguió como un pensador independiente e innovador, desempeñando numerosos cargos de liderazgo y asesoría. Sus contribuciones fueron reconocidas con honores por diversas organizaciones, incluyendo el Departamento de Comercio de los Estados Unidos y el Estado de Texas.

Con más de 35 años de experiencia en comercio y logística internacional, Jorge se convirtió en un líder respetado en su ámbito. Posteriormente, se mudó con su familia a San Antonio, Texas, con el Puerto de San Antonio, y más tarde fundó J. Canavati & Co. LLC, una firma de consultoría en comercio y logística internacional. Fue en su momento el presidente del Global Chamber San Antonio y ocupó cargos ejecutivos en la Asociación Nacional de Importadores y Exportadores de la República Mexicana (ANIERM) en Norteamérica. Fue nombrado miembro del Consejo de Exportación del Distrito Camino Real por el Secretario de Comercio de los Estados Unidos y participó en múltiples consejos directivos, incluyendo el Consejo de Amistad San Antonio-México y el Consejo de Visitantes Internacionales de San Antonio.

También fue un apasionado educador y mentor, impartiendo conferencias en universidades y foros internacionales, y fungiendo como profesor invitado en la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, donde enseñó cursos sobre la logística energética.

Más allá de sus logros profesionales, las pasiones de Jorge lo definían con la misma intensidad. Tenía un profundo amor por la música, especialmente el jazz, así como por la parrillada, el arte, los animales, la lectura y, sin falta, el humor negro. Tras establecerse en San Antonio, encontró una forma significativa de compartir su amor por la música al ofrecerse como voluntario en KRTU 91.7 FM de la Universidad Trinity. Allí, y con el apoyo de JJ López y Ron Nirenburg, creó y condujo Jazz de México, un programa que creció hasta convertirse en una vitrina de reconocimiento global para los artistas de jazz mexicanos. La mayoría de los días, lo podías encontrar en su patio, disfrutando del jazz, fumando un puro y saboreando los placeres sencillos de la vida, con frecuencia  acompañado de sus famosas costillas y brisket sazonados con su premiado rub, Kay Brown’s. Por encima de todo, Jorge fue un esposo, padre y abuelo dedicado, y su familia siempre fue su todo.

Jorge fue precedido en la muerte por sus padres, Jorge y Carmen, y su hermana Sylvia.

Se le recuerda con cariño por su esposa de 43 años, Daisy; su hija, Gabriela; su hijo, Jorge; su nuera, Michelle; sus dos queridos nietos; su perrija Lucy; su hermano, Gerardo; sus hermanas, Carmen y Beatriz; y un sinnúmero de sobrinos, colegas, artistas de jazz y queridos amigos cuyas vidas tocó.

Se celebrará una Misa a las 10:00 a.m. el viernes 1 de mayo de 2026 en la Iglesia Católica Holy Trinity en San Antonio, Texas, ubicada en 20523 Huebner Rd.

En lugar de flores, la familia solicita amablemente que se hagan donaciones en memoria de Jorge a KRTU, la Sociedad Americana del Cáncer, la ACLU, la Sociedad Protectora de Animales o la Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul, organizaciones en las que Jorge creía y a las que donaba mensualmente.
