Mrs. Juanita Washington, affectionately known as “Sweetie” for her love of baking and sharing from the heart, went home to be with the Lord on August 13, 2025, in Converse, Texas. She was born June 4, 1939, in Gonzales, Texas, to Dewitt and Lois Johnson.
A devoted servant of God and faithful member of New Hope Baptist Church, Mother Washington’s presence touched every aspect of the congregation. She joyfully planned and coordinated countless church events, including pastor anniversaries, church anniversaries, and special programs. She also faithfully prepared church resolutions honoring those who had passed, ensuring each life was celebrated with dignity and grace.
Mother Washington’s voice lifted praises in the Senior Choir, and her hands and heart blessed others through her cooking. She was known for bringing her delicious cakes, pies, cookies, and salads to every church gathering, making each fellowship feel like a family reunion. Each Sunday, she inspired the congregation with uplifting poems of encouragement, reminding everyone of God’s promises. Among her favorite hymns was “Jesus Is A Way Maker”, a song that reflected the faith she lived daily.
Beyond her church service, “Sweetie” was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend who never ceased to share her love through food, hospitality, and prayer.
She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Willie F. Erskine, Jr. and his wife, Tony; siblings, Mary Allen and Elizabeth Steemer; grandchildren, Darrick Granger, Natasha Williams, Juanita Williams, Marquelin Granger, Marquita Williams, Brenetta Erskine, and Brashad Erskine; great-grandchildren, Brianna Williams, Destinee Williams, Amirah Granger, Janiyah Harris, Daniella Erskine, Josiah Erskine, Makayla Williams, and Ryleigh Williams; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, church members, and friends.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Washington; her children, Sandra Wilson and Carolyn Williams; her parents; and siblings, Dewitt Johnson Jr., Walter Johnson, Helen Cunningham, Pearl Johnson, Laura Brown, Franklin Johnson, Robert Johnson, and Margaret Johnson.
Mrs. Juanita “Sweetie” Washington’s life was a living testimony of faith, love, and service. Her kindness, generosity, and devotion will forever be remembered, and her legacy will continue to live on in the lives of all who were blessed to know her.

We, praise God for bringing you into our lives at New Hope Baptist Church. We will remember your tributes, your poems, and homemade pineapple cookies for the kids 😋
We will miss your beautiful smile, and words of wisdom from the bible to all that will receive it.
We will keep the family and friends in pray.
Precious Mother Washington
Words cannot express the lost my heart feels. I’m going to miss hearing your voice everyday and our talks throughout the day before I went to work and after work as I was driving home. You were a “Beautiful Example” of a Woman of God and the love you showed to me will never be forgotten. I Praise God for the opportunity of every prayer and hugs we shared. Thank you for making every church and pastoral event a success and for the delicious meals and desserts you always prepared and you always kept a plate on the side for me. Your poetry and inspirational writings always blessed every heart. It will certainly be difficult for me without you here but I know I will see you again at the pearly gates of Heaven where our Almighty God and Savior Jesus Christ will join us together again in the realms of His Eternal Glory. I love you with all my heart.
Rest now as you receive your crown and hear the words of our Savior say “Well Done”!

My sincere condolences to your entire family.
Mama “Sweetie” oh how you will be missed. You were a jewel and a blessing to our family. When we last talked we laughed and reflected on the Senior Choir days at New Hope. You, Sister Stewart and Sister Simms used to “Hold Down” that front row. When we would sing “I made it over” you 3 “Supremes for Jesus” would stir up a spirit that could not be contained. Thank you for the sheet cakes, baked chicken, string beans and potatoes, dressing and all the good food you so unselfishly fed us on Sundays and other special occasions. You will be missed but I know “You made it over”
I love you Aunt Sweetie!!! I’m glad I got to see you at the family reunion last year. God brought you home and you get to bask in his glorious beauty and presence. Give my grandma Laura Jo a hug for me
I met Juanita in 1962, when I joined New Hope Baptist Church. We visited often by phone and really enjoyed those long talks. Family, remember those we love can never be more than a thought away… for as long as there is a memory, they live in our hearts to stay. I am keeping you close in my thoughts and prayers.
We offer prayers and condolences to Willie Erskine and the entire bereaved family.
My sincere condolences to the family
