Her childhood in rural Iowa during the great depression was far from carefree but she had good memories, was a cheerleader at Auburn high school where she graduated from a class of 12 students. She helped in the war effort as a "Rosie the riveter" working at the bomber factory in Omaha, where she met Roger Burchell, they were married in 1944. She was also a waitress at Peony Park- an amusement park in Omaha where big band era entertainment was featured, as well as movie stars of the day. She even got a kiss on stage from actor Jimmy Stewart! The family moved back to Iowa in 1956 living in Wall Lake and Fort Dodge until moving to San Antonio in 1963. Marvel worked at Handy Andy supermarket, Bowman's and Mursch (sporting goods) selling ski wear. She returned to Iowa after Roger's death in 1986, to be near her elderly mother, and lived in Lake View until 2005. Marvel was known to family and friends as a wonderful cook who loved home improvement projects - always painting something - gardening and taking long walks around the Alamo Heights neighborhood or near the Blackhawk Lake. She will be dearly missed and always remembered. Services are pending. Special appreciation to Associates Home Healthcare who were so compassionate and helped her stay independent for as long as possible, and to the staff of San Pedro Manor who cared for her with kindness during the last 18 months. Because Marvel always cared for our veterans, donations could be made in her name to The Wounded Warriors Project or other veteran's organization.

  1. I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family for the loss of your loved one. May God almighty father of tender mercies and all comfort continue to comfort you all (2 Corinthians 1: 3, 4). Please know that God has promised to completely remove death, tears, mourning, outcry and pain (Revelation 21:4). Indeed we all eagerly anticipate the fulfillment of these promise. The Bible also provides assurance of a real hope of reuniting with our dead loved ones in the coming new world (John 5: 28, 29). At a time like this the Bible is a true source of comfort and you can read it online and also learn further about God’s purposes at http://www.jw.org
