Mattie Henderson

mattie henderson
Mattie Henderson was born on September 22, 1936 in Wilmington, North Carolina to Percy Cooper and Mattie Webb-Cooper. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age and was baptized at St. Stephens A.M.E in Wilmington. Mattie was united in holy matrimony to Marvin Henderson on August 20, 1966. To this union, they had three children; Michelle, Melodie and Marvin Jr. The family lived in El Paso for eight years where Mattie was active duty in the United States Air Force. She proudly served 10 years for our country. After being diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 1969, the family moved to San Antonio where Mattie and Marvin would have greater support in raising their family. Even with the diagnosis, Mattie did not let anything slow her down. She continued to serve the military in Civil Service at Randolph, Lackland and Kelly Force Bases at various points in her career. Mattie was also actively involved in her church and in the community. She was a member of Blacks in Government (B.I.G.), the NAACP and Toastmasters to name a few of her associations. Mattie won multiple awards for her public speaking abilities while involved with Toastmasters. She was the one to call on if you needed a presentation done or someone to speak at your church or community function. Mattie was also quite the salesperson and loved helping people to become healthier with the different nutritional products that she sold. The word stranger was not in her vocabulary, so she easily interacted with folks of all walks of life, building her different business ventures by putting together different pageants, fashion shows and plays in San Antonio. Mattie was a kind soul, without an iota of pretense about her. What you saw in Mattie was honest and genuine. For those that knew her twin, Mamie, you witnessed love personified between Mattie and her sister. She loved her twin with every ounce of her being and now they will meet again, along with her mother and sister who she reflected on regularly in her illness. Matties overall love for her family and friends was sincere and she will be greatly missed. She was called home to be with our Lord on Wednesday, November 8, 2017, in Grand Prairie, Texas after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was 81 years old. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mattie Webb-Cooper, her father, Percy Cooper, her sister, Latisha Jones, her twin sister, Mamie Herring and her brother Isaiah Herring. She is survived by her husband, Marvin Henderson, her sister, Clara DeVaughn, her children; Michelle Henderson-Chambers, Melodie Henderson-Shaw, Marvin Henderson, her bonus children; Steve Jacson and Suzette Henderson, her son-in-loves; Derrin Chambers and Roland Shaw, her nieces; Robin Smith, Sharon Devane, Gloria Jones, Sylvia Jones, Cynthia Jones, her nephews; Calvin Herring, Fred Herring and Tyrone Herring. A host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and cousins, great nieces and nephews.
