Melinda Ruth Alexander, age 69 of San Antonio Texas, passed away at Vitas Hospice & Palliative Care in San Antonio, Texas on Sunday, October 20, 2024. Melinda was born February 1,1955 in East Chicago, Indiana to the late Arthur M and Margaret J (Toth) Dick.
Melinda was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in East Chicago, Indiana where her grandfather, Steven Toth (a Hungarian immigrant), was a founding member. As a child she helped her Grandmother clean the church and iron clothes for the pulpit. Melinda became a resident of San Antonio, Texas in 2006 and immediately fell in love with the state. She was blessed to be a caregiver for her grandson, Sean, while her daughter, Caitlin, was serving her deployments and duty reassignments for the United States Airforce. She was very patriotic and very proud of her children who served in the Military. She loved to listen to Reveille and Retreat heard on the Air Force bases. Melinda was a competitive bowler partnered with her Aunt Delores “Dolly” Marvel with whom she won a state championship in Indiana in 1983. She was also passionate about playing Bingo and made many dear friends at the Bingo halls around San Antonio. She was an avid reader and spent many nights reading Stephen King novels and other psychological thrillers. Some of her favorite memories consisted of Friday night Alfred Hitchcock movie sessions with her children as they laid on the living room floor in sleeping bags. Melinda loved all her children and grandchildren dearly. Her one wish for them was that they would always be close and take care of each other. She was blessed to have witnessed this wish come true.
Surviving are her brother, Arthur N (Christine) Dick of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, her children William (Jill) Sohl of Winter Garden, Florida, Amanda (Jeff) Guess of Granger, Indiana, Margaret (Jamie) Woods of Mishawaka, Indiana, Bryan (Cheryl) Sohl of Lexington Park, Maryland, Caitlin Alexander of San Antonio, Texas, and James C. Alexander of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and her twelve grandchildren: Madison (Kiernan), Jillian (Grant), Tyler, Avery, Sean, Hailey, Covah, Shelby, Landon, Alacard, Zeke, and Piper. Her first great grandchild, Ronan, is due to arrive in the coming months.
In following her wishes, cremation has been chosen. A memorial service for family and dear friends will be held in the Summer of 2025 in Northern Indiana.
