Nina Y. Neighbors, affectionately known as” Nina Jo”, who passed peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at the age of 75 years. Born in San Antonio, Texas on February 24, 1949 to the late Ernest and Ida Ruth Butler Hamilton, Nina lived a life marked by intelligence, kindness, and an unwavering dedication to those she loved.
A proud graduate of Edgewood High School, Nina’s academic journey was one of excellence. She was an exceptional student, skipping the 5th grade due to her remarkable intelligence. After high school, she attended St. Phillips College, where she earned her associate’s degree, showcasing her commitment to learning and personal growth. Growing up she attended Macedonia Baptist Church. Nina attended Bible study every Friday at 7pm, called Friday night Power Hour through the Ministry of Grace by Reverend Michael D. Satterfield.
Nina was a woman of extraordinary character, always putting others before herself. She found joy in the simplest pleasures of life, whether it was shopping, chatting with loved ones on the phone, or watching her favorite shows on TV. Her love and support for her only daughter, Teresa were boundless. Nina was her daughter’s biggest cheerleader, attending track and field competitions around the world, supporting her modeling and dancing endeavors, and always encouraging her educational pursuits. She always made special time with her only grandson, Martin, her beloved grandson, shared a special bond with his ‘Mema through their cherished conversations and shared love of music. “My Mema had a beautiful way of connecting with people,” Martin recalls. “We’d spend hours talking about life and the world, sharing stories, and listening to old-school music together. She’d light up with joy when I knew the classics, and she always showed genuine interest in learning about my interests too. I loved surprising her with her favorite steaks and sitting in her room, having our heart-to-heart talks. She was a sweet soul who never judged others – a beautiful person inside and out.
Nina’s warm spirit, compassion, and generosity left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her. She will be remembered for her selflessness, her unshakeable faith in her loved ones, and her joyful personality that could light up any room. She was an extraordinary woman to all she knew.
She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Douglas Neighbors Jr. her beloved daughter, Teresa Neighbors, grandson, Martin Patton Jr., great-granddaughter, Aaliyah Alise Patton, sisters, Anita Robinson, Hardie Brooks, Ingrid Bell, Adda Pickney and Gloria Harrison and numerous friends who will forever cherish the memories of her love, laughter, and boundless support.
Rest in peace, Nina Jo. You will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.

Not a goodbye, but a see you later.
She wanted Teresa and me to have our happily ever after, and even though life didn’t turn out that way, her love for me never changed. She treated me like one of her own, and for that, I will forever be grateful. She loved me to sing to her, that was our special bonding moment.
She was a second mother to me in every way that mattered, and her presence in my life was a blessing I didn’t deserve but will always cherish.
My heart aches for Teresa, Mr Neighbors (Doug),and Martin—who was like a second son to me. I know the pain of losing her runs deep, but I also know that the love she gave, the wisdom she shared, and the kindness she showed will never fade. She left her mark on this world in the best way—by being a beautiful soul who lifted others up.
Miss Neighbors, you were one of a kind. Thank you for everything—the love, the support, and the belief in me, I will miss you more than words can say, but I find peace knowing that your love will always be with us.
Rest easy, Miss Nina Neighbors. Until we meet again.🙏🏾💐
Our lives took separate paths for many years until God led us to meet again in Kirby, Texas. To our surprise, we ended up living across the street from one another (well over 50 years).
Nina, I love you and will always miss and cherish our friendship. May God continue to grant comfort, strength, and peace to Doug, Teresa, Martin, and all the family.❤️💐😇🙏🏼

Love you cousin. I always thought you were so beautiful. The times we visited with you in the far away city of Kirby, at that time, was always fun. You were always so nice to us and made us feel loved. Visiting with you as an adult was always a treat. I wish we could’ve had more time together. I look forward to seeing you and enjoying your company for eternity. It’s not goodbye it’s see you later. Rest well.
Love, Susan Hornback VanKoughnet

I will miss my dear sweet friend Nina. She was the nicest, sweetest and most loyal friend I have ever had. Nina always had a good conversation and a listening ear every time we talked which was every other day. I missed talking with her when I left the country for a while but we wrote letters so our friendship never missed a beat. Our friendship lasted decades and she and I never had an argument or disagreement . My sons always called her Aunt Nina and my cuz Uncle Dug. She was like a sister to me. My sons and I thought the world of her and loved her as she loved us dearly. Rest now dear sister friend we will miss you ALWAYS. My deepest condolences to Theresa, Doug and Martin Jr and I am praying for you all.
