Resided in: San Antonio, Texas

With broken hearts and immeasurable love, we announce the passing of our beloved son, grandson, brother, and friend, Rafael Jeven Villarreal, who left this world far too soon on October 5, 2025, at the age of fifteen.

Born on November 24, 2009, Rafael came into our lives with a radiant spirit and a heart full of joy. From a young age, he lit up every room with his infectious smile and endless energy. He was a bright soul who loved deeply, gave freely, and lived every moment with courage and creativity.

Rafael was an artist through and through. Whether he was sketching, drawing incredible worlds from his imagination, or losing himself in his favorite video games like Call of Duty, he expressed himself in ways that touched and inspired everyone around him. His love for sharks and dinosaurs was legendary—his curiosity knew no bounds, and his imagination had no limits.

Proud of his heritage, Rafael embraced Latino culture and had a deep love for Mexico, where he felt a strong sense of connection, joy, and pride. He had a special way of bringing people together—he was always the life of the party, making others laugh, dance, and feel seen. He celebrated life, even when his own path was filled with difficult challenges.

For many years, Rafael bravely battled Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) with strength far beyond his years. He faced every day with resilience, humor, and unwavering positivity. His smile never faded, and his courage became a guiding light to those who knew him. His strength made him a hero in the eyes of his family and friends.

He was selfless and compassionate, always thinking of others—even during his hardest moments. He was a role model to his siblings and cousins, a rock to his parents and grandparents, and a loyal, loving friend to many. He had the biggest heart and a gentle soul.

Rafael’s favorite color was purple—vibrant, bold, and full of life, just like him. In honor of his memory and the joy he brought into our lives, the family kindly asks that all who attend his funeral wear purple or bright, joyful colors to celebrate his beautiful spirit.

Rafael is survived by his loving parents, Juan Villarreal Jr. and Jessica Villarreal; his devoted siblings, Jessalyn Camacho, Juan Carlos Villarreal III, Jaydelyn Villarreal, and Anthony Salazar; his cherished grandparents Bertha Salazar, Mary Elizabeth Paiz, and Susan and Geoffrey Merritt; and a wide circle of family and friends who will carry his memory in their hearts forever.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated professionals who provided exceptional care to Jeven throughout his illness. Special thanks are offered to his home health nurse, Anthony Bueno, for his unwavering support and compassion since April 2025; his care team at VITAS Healthcare, particularly nurses Jo and Amy, along with the comfort provided by their chaplains; and his expert physicians at UT Health San Antonio, Dr. Steven Seidner and Dr. Glen Medellin.

Pallbearers will be Anthony Bueno, James Merritt, Juan Carlos Villarreal III, Kenyon McClure, Rogelio Paniagua, Juan Antonio Arambula accompanied by honorary pallbearers; Anthony Salazar, Christopher Merritt, Matthew Paiz, and Victor Montoya.

Though his time here was short, Rafael left a lasting impact. He taught us to love harder, laugh louder, and never take a single moment for granted. His legacy will live on in every drawing, every story, every smile, and in the lives of all who were blessed to know him.

Guestbook

  1. Wishing you peace and comfort during this sad time. May happy memories help lesson your loss.
    Rest in peace sweet Jeven.
We love you and miss you terribly.💙🙏😇✝️

  2. A sweet memory of Jeven was when we went to go eat crawfish at a restaurant. He thought the waitress was pretty and wanted to give her a tip. He had his money sitting on the table and we all paid the bill. I told Jeven to put his money away and he said ok. I really wanted to buy me a new video game with that money. We laughed so hard. I’m going to miss that sweet, funny guy so much!!💙😇🙏

  3. CandleImageI’m so very sorry for your loss My heart goes out to you, Jessica and Johnny and the rest of of your family. I can’t even imagine the feeling of this kind of loss. I know we haven’t seen each other in a long time but I remember everything you guys went through to get him and make him one of your own children and give him a better life. I saw through social media what good care of him you took. My heart breaks for you all

  5. Johnny, Jess,

I havent been able to find any words to try and send comfort to you all. And i really don’t think there will ever be, because I cannot imagine what you are feeling.

To say y’all are amazing parents is an understatement. I remember when Jeven first entered your lives, he was a totally different little boy.

Jessica, friend, I saw you pour your heart and soul into him. From day one. You took those good and bad days like a champ, like the damn good mother you are. I will never forget the way Jeven looked at you Jess. With all of the love and admiration in the world, just as you deserve.

You both changed someone’s life entirely. You gave someone the best life possible. And it shows, because he was the happiest. But i do know more than anything you both know how much he changed your lives. He made you both better parents, better individuals. That was amazing to witness from the outside looking in.

We love you all so much. Thank you for allowing us to be part of Jeven’s journey with you all from day one.

  6. Jess & Johnny I’m so sorry for your loss, Jeven was such a sweet soul he made a huge impact in Isaiah’s life. May God wrap his arms around you guys during this difficult time.
