Roy Munson Elliott

roy elliott
Roy Munson Elliott, age 83, of San Antonio, Texas, died Thursday, September 24, 2015, at Methodist Hospital San Antonio, after a brief illness. Roy was born January 1, 1932, in Morales, Jackson County, Texas, land of oil and bountiful soil to the late Eva Stafford Elliott and Roy Lessly Elliott. He grew up in close proximity to his maternal grandparents and mentors, the late Munson and Eva Duncan Stafford who were farmers and ranchers in Morales, Texas. His family upbringing taught Roy to have a love of God, the land, fine horses, and the value of having a good education and work ethic. As a youth, he received his Christian training at the Roughts Chapel Methodist Church, where his mother, grandparents, and other family members were church lay leaders. Roy attended Edna primary and secondary schools, graduating from George Washington Carver High School in May 1949. He entered Saint Philips Junior College in San Antonio the following fall, and graduated with an associates degree in 1951. He took a summer job at Kelly Air Force Base then left to continue his education at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. By Christmas break Roy was missing San Antonio, and decided to return to his job at Kelly Air Force Base where he soon entered the Air Force Electrician Apprentice program. His training was cut short in 1952 when he was drafted into the Army for the Korean Conflict, but most of the fighting was over by the time he completed basic training. He received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in January 1955, and returned to Kelly Air Force Base to complete his training, and graduated in June 1958 as a Journeyman Aircraft Electrician where he worked on C47, T6, F85, F86, C54, B58, B52B, B52D, and T38, until he was promoted into management in 1966. He advanced to aircraft quality inspection, quality assurance, and process and improvement, which he retired from March 31, 1993. Roy lived a full and eventful life before and after his retirement, investing his time and energy to his family, friends, hobbies, civic engagement, the family homestead, and travel. He was also a sports enthusiast and even travelled to Japan to see the Dallas Cowboys play the Houston Oilers. He was the proud owner of fine Arabian horses and for many years was active in Trail Riding clubs. He was also formerly an active member in the Masons, Elks Lodge No. 499, and East St. Paul United Methodist Church of San Antonio, Texas. Roy is survived by family members and many friends who will miss his wit, keen intellect, and colorful conversation. Many thanks to his special friend Geneva Eddington, who has been a faithful companion and helper over the past ten years. The family would also like to acknowledge Vicky Eddington, Geral Rhoder, Chaplain Fredrick, and ex-wife Catherine Elliott for your friendship and support during this difficult time. Family and friends will gather at Scruggs United Methodist Church, 313 N. Carver, Edna, Texas and proceed together to the cemetery.
