San Antonio, Texas
Surang “Sue” Yimvitaya Hendrix lived a life filled with faith, family, friendship and service to others.
Born on February 21, 1941, in a village near Bangkok, Thailand, Sue made the courageous decision to move to the United States at age 32. She soon became a U.S. citizen and built a beautiful life in San Antonio, Texas. In 1974 she married Air Force Master Sergeant Edward L. Hendrix, and together they created a home filled with love, hard work and hospitality.
Sue and Edward were pioneers in bringing Thai culture and cuisine to San Antonio, opening one of the area’s first Thai restaurants and grocery stores in the late 1970’s.
Her Temple – Dhammabucha Buddhist Temple – was one of the great joys of her life. Whether tending gardens, preparing meals or helping with special events, Sue was always willing to lend a hand. She treasured the many friendships she made there over the years.
Known affectionately as “Grandma Sue” she welcomed her stepchildren and grandchildren with open arms and a generous heart.
Sue was a woman of many talents. She was a gifted seamstress, an avid gardener and an exceptional cook. She spent much of her career in the restaurant industry, including many years as hostess and assistant manager at Tokyo Steakhouse. As a dedicated San Antonio Spurs fan, she delighted in meeting and hosting several Spurs players throughout the years.
Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Edward L. Hendrix.
She leaves behind her stepchildren, Toni D. Hans (Kenneth), Joel Todd Hull (Cindy), and Teri G. Wells; six grandchildren; her temple family and countless friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness and generosity.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Sue’s caregivers at Blue Skies of Texas – The Mission and the Hospice Volunteers for their kindness, compassion and dedicated care they provided. Their support brought comfort to Sue and her family and will always be remembered with deep appreciation.
Though she is gone from our sight, her spirit, love and memories will remain with us always.
