Aleene Block finished setting the example of what it meant to live your faith on November 19, 2023. Ninety-eight years of blazing a trail for women of faith that benefitted everyone. She was born July 3, 1925, in Port Neches, Texas.
Aleene was a graduate of three Methodist colleges, Lon Morris, Southwestern University and Southern Methodist University, Perkins School of Theology in 1957.
She was teacher at her core. First in Christian education as a youth director in the Texas Conference and then as the Director of Christian education at Laurel Heights United Methodist Church in San Antonio. Her second career was as a 6th grade teacher in Alamo Heights ISD.
Serving God was her life’s vocation as exampled in 1955 when she went to Glay, France with the World Council of Churches to rebuild goodwill. She was best friends with God, and it showed in her commitment to the church and community. As a faithful member of Laurel Heights UMC, she served in almost every leadership role including beloved Sunday school teacher. She worked at making everyone welcome and finished that work at Morningside Ministries Retirement Community.
At 98, she was preceded in death by many including her parents, Albert and Lillian Block, her sisters Merle and Wilma and her longtime friend, Dinah Tanner. Her legacy continues through nephews and nieces as well as so many friends who were her family.
The world is a better place because Aleene Block worked to make it so. Please do the same. Her Celebration of Life will be December 7th at 10:30am at Laurel Heights United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Project Transformation Rio Texas or Laurel Heights United Methodist Church.
