Alex Calfas, 91, passed away in the peace of his home on June 21st, 2006. Born in Constantinople, Turkey, Sept. 22, 1914, his family immigrated to America in 1921. He had been a resident of San Antonio for the past 65 years. Alex was a successful entrepreneur owning several restaurants, bars and hotels. He was always a great father, husband and he was very generous to numerous relatives and friends. Alex is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Jane Hattan Calfas and two sons, Neil and Dorian Calfas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and George Gianopoulos, his uncles and cousin: Spiro, George, Nick and Fia Calfas Other surviving cousins and relatives include: Tom Petrakos of New York, NY., Becky Ellis of Austin, TX., Fifi O'Connor of San Antonio, Elaine Benwitz, Denise Damon and Rebecca Craven of Virginia Beach, VA., Catherine Calfas of Norfolk, VA., Mary Kudrna of WI., Mary and Carl Gross and Evelyn and John Garas of IN., Mary Ann Kyger, Tom Ellis and Carrie Morgan of Austin, Bill, Dan, Robert and Greg O'Connor and Kathleen Polett of San Antonio. A private service was held at the home shortly after his death by Father Dan of St.Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church. Memorials to St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church at 2504 N. We were saddened to read of Mr. Calfas death in Sunday’s paper. Although we were neighbors for only 6 months, some 30 years ago, we fondly remember the family and how hard Mr. Calfas worked for the family. He had a very commendable work ethic.
