The Lord’s Angel, Barry DeWayne Mitchell, was called home to rest on Wednesday, January 11, 2023. He was born and welcomed as a new bundle of joy to the proud parents Loverine and Bonnie Mitchell in Denison, TX on January 14, 1960.
He was baptized and joined St. Paul Baptist Church at an early age and was a devout Christian. At the age of 20, he joined Grace Baptist Church, where he continued his worship for many years.
Barry’s signature brand was Polo – He wore it often and all who knew him can attest to the fact that he was always well-dressed from head-to-toe! He pursued his passion for photography (PT) for approximately 7 years – capturing special memories for a host of fun events!
His specialty was weddings but he also enjoyed preserving special moments for a variety of events for family & friends!
Barry started his workforce journey employed at Baskin Robbins on Military Drive in San Antonio, TX. He would bring gallons of ice cream home they couldn’t resale and one of Mom’s fondest memories was the variety of ice cream flavors they shared together!….What a treat!
Shortly after he worked at Fox Photo on Broadway, which is now known as the “Pearl District”, a distinguished attraction spot in the San Antonio area.
Among his many talents, Barry’s dexterity for fixing anything you can think of couldn’t be matched. His expertise in assembly and mastering the skill of building, repairing, and creating was unsurpassed! No instruction manual needed (smile)….He housed a natural ability for the craft, which was always very helpful to soo many!!
Barry started school in Darmstadt, Germany. He earned his High School Diploma from John Jay High School in San Antonio, TX and continued his studies to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from the University of Incarnate Word.
His love for the financial industry served him well in respect to earning his stockbroker’s license, passing both the Series 7 & 63 exams, with flying scores at his first attempt while employed at USAA.
Barry also held positions at other distinguished employers, SWBC, WAMU, and most recent Nationwide Insurance of which he contributed his expertise and excelled with grace.
A super sports fan, Barry loved Jackie Robinson of the Brooklyn Dodgers! Soo much so, his favorite number was Jackie’s jersey number, 42! Also a football fan at heart – Emmitt Smith of the Dallas Cowboys was among his favorite players as well! Of course, we can’t forget the San Antonio Spurs – always a supportive fan of the home team!
Barry’s personality would always light up a room! He was the life of any party -The way he greeted and interacted with everyone was always a delight! As a teenager, one of his favorite weekend pastimes was going to Skateland West, where he and his group of friends were considered to be the best skaters there were!
Barry also loved to show off his dance moves to Country, Pop, and R&B music any chance he had an opportunity to do so. One of the best dance partners for sure! Spending time with him was always loads of fun and memories never to be forgotten!

My heart is so broken to hear of your passing. I am so blessed to have been able to call you my friend. I am forever grateful for all the times we broke bread together. Your voice echoes in my head, and instantly takes me back to all of the wonderful memories we shared together with friends. You were the kindest, most authentic, most fun person I knew, and you lit up my life. You are loved Barry and will be greatly missed.
My condolences to the entire Mitchell family.
It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.
My heartfelt condolences to the Mitchell family. In searching for Barry so as to reconnect with him, I learned of his passing. There will never be another friend for me that will measure up to Barry. He and I could spend hours talking about anything and everything! No to mention the hours spent on the dance floor….from the moment the music began until the lights came on! And, no one….absolutely no one….will ever measure up to the talent he had for country dancing! I will miss you tremendously my sweet friend! But, I know we will see each other again one day! May God’s eternal light shine brightly upon you, Barry. Rest in peace my beautiful friend!!
