Bernice Scruggs

bernice scruggs
Our loving Mother and Grandmother, Bernice (Granny) Scruggs, age 73, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends on September 16, 2005. Bernice was born in Weimar, Texas January 6, 1932, the 2nd of 18 children, to Marcus and Lettie Chandler, who preceded her in death. Bernice moved to San Antonio, Texas in the 1950's where she resided until she went to be with her lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She accepted Christ while she was a member of the Hebrew Church of God in Christ under the teachings of Superintendent Leroy Duhart. Bernice worked as a Home Health Aid, assisting the elderly in her early career, later retiring as a housewife. She was a member of New Birth Church of God in Christ in San Antonio where her husband, Rev G.L. Scruggs of Sherman, Texas currently pastors. They met in the church and later began their Union of Matrimony, where no offspring were produced. Her favorite song, 'I MADE A VOW TO THE LORD', is a song Bernice sang in churches throughout her years dedicating her entire adult life serving God. She suffered several strokes in the mid 90's, but by her unusual strength to survive, prayer and faith in Jesus Christ, she now rests in peace. She was a woman of great faith, strength and all who knew her were truly blessed. All that knew her will miss her love, caring and nurturing spirit. She is survived by five children and their wives; Bennie L. Burley and Jackie, Evelyn L. Buchanan, Bertha J. Lampkin, Charles R. Burley and Nancy, James D. Burley and Linda, 18 beloved grandchildren; Stephanie, Cecil, Fred, Jr., Stanley, Miranda, Michelle, Jerald, Kristi, Tashaniki, April, Winona, Mereel, Nashay, James, Shawanna, LaKisha, Bernice, Erika, beloved siblings; Arthur of Austin, Hazel of Houston, Jewel of Dallas, Dorothy, Merlene, George, James and Ethel Mae all of San Antonio. Visitation will be held at New Birth Church of God in Christ, 479 Ferris, San Antonio, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on September 22, 2005, with words delivered by Pastor Joseph Ward of Grady Memorial Church of God in Christ.
