July 31, 1919 ~ October 29, 2013
Carmen Spriggs Haynes, the youngest and last surviving offspring of Bessie Harris Spriggs and Ernest Spriggs, passed from this life peacefully on October 29, 2013.
Carmen was born in Marion, Texas, on July 30, 1919. She graduated from San Antonio public schools and operated a beauty parlor on San Antonio's Eastside with her sister Lillian for over 30 years. She was a devoted daughter, caring for her mother for many years. Although close throughout their lives, after they were each widowed late in life, Carmen and Lillian were each other's constant companion and emotional bedrock . She loved to wear hats and looked good wearing them. Animals, especially dogs, were a special weakness; Carmen shared most of her life with one pet after another. Carmen loved to laugh, and making her laugh gave those close to her great pleasure. She contributed and derived much joy through her role as a member of the assisted living community at Sterling House of Maltsberger, her last residence.
Carmen Haynes was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Haynes-- by sisters Rhonda Gannel Spriggs, Corrine Spriggs Jones, and Lillian Spriggs Sulthoff-- by brothers Aubrey Spriggs, Clayton Spriggs and Eldred Vincent Spriggs-- and by niece Jacqueline Spriggs Revis. She is survived by her niece, Barbara Spriggs, by cousins Gary W. Houston and Sylvia Houston Schulman and by several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
