Earnest Washington, 76, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on September 12, 1947, in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Mary Hicks and Earnest Harding Washington. After graduating from Walker High School, Earnest served one term in the United States Air Force. It was during his time stationed in San Antonio that he met the love of his life, Mary Alice Williams.
Following the birth of their two children, Earnest recommitted to military service by joining the United States Army. Together, the family traveled the globe, being stationed in Germany, Korea, Arizona, Georgia, and Houston. Their final station was Fort Gordon, Georgia, before they chose to settle permanently in San Antonio. Earnest retired from the United States Army after more than 25 years of dedicated service.
Upon moving to San Antonio, Earnest became a beloved substitute teacher within the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD), known for his dedication and popularity. His expertise in Signal and Communication during his military career fostered a lifelong passion for working with computers, which he enthusiastically shared with others. An avid reader and music lover, Earnest was always eager to impart his knowledge to anyone willing to listen.
Earnest is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Linda (Al) and Clay, and his granddaughter Tiffany. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 57 years, Mary A. Washington; his children, Earnest Washington III (Rose) and Michelle Tanner (Rick); his grandchildren, Batiste, Veronica, Christopher, Nikie, Dillan, and Collin; his great-grandchildren, Theresa and Mikaela; his siblings Sylvia Warden (George), Gracie Jones (John), Cassandra Harriston, and Cynthia Wilson; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
The Washington family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude for the past decade of outstanding medical care at Brooke Army Medical Center that allowed us to enjoy his care and love beyond the limits of his health challenges. They did everything humanly possible to keep him here, but God has his own timeline. We will miss him dearly.
