Edwina Salas, entered into eternal rest with the Lord on Monday, August 31, 2026. She was born on July 23, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, affectionately known as “Chip,” a cherished nickname given to her, Edwina was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend. She devoted her life to serving and uplifting others, leaving an enduring impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Edwina was a proud graduate of Depaul University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1980 as well as obtaining her Masters of Education degree from Grand Canyon University. She dedicated much of her professional life to education,human resources,administration, and serving others.
She went on to assist as secretary at New Creation Fellowship and Mt.Zion First Baptist Church. In 1989, Edwina joined HEB as a compensation analyst and for many years conducted and helped develop equitable compensation programs.
Edwina dedicated 30 years of faithful service to teaching young children at various schools for SAISD,where she worked alongside school administrators and retired from Mary Hull Elementary School at NISD in 2017. Her passion for education extended beyond the classroom. She earned a Literacy Specialist certification and also worked as a private tutor for the Oblate School of Theology. A gifted and dedicated educator, Edwina spoke French, Korean,and Spanish using her talents and knowledge to connect with and help others.
Edwina was a woman of strong and unwavering faith. Her love for God was reflected not only in her words, but in the way she lived her life. Helping others was her passion, and she continually sought ways to encourage, teach, comfort, and serve those around her.
She was baptized at St.Malachy Church in 1958 and became a devoted life member of Mt. Zion First Baptist Church later on, a place that held a special meaning in her heart. It was there that she and her beloved husband of 38 years, Mario Marcel Salas, were married. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, family, love, and cherished memories.
Edwina found great joy in the simple blessings of life. She loved cooking, especially preparing her special macaroni & cheese and enchiladas, and was delighted in creating lasting memories with her children.
But above all, Edwina treasured her grandchildren. Caring for them, teaching them, guiding them, and simply being present in their lives brought her immeasurable joy. She proudly carried the beloved name “MeeMee,” a title she held close to her heart and wore with great pride.
Her gentle spirit, generous heart, wisdom, laughter, and unwavering love will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Though she is no longer with us in body, the lessons she taught, the lives she touched, and the memories she created will continue to live on. Edwina was preceded in death by her son Raymond Cook Jr.,her parents Elyse Lacy-Adams and James Lacy Sr. , and Christy Mallory along with other close family members and is now joyfully reunited with them in the presence of the Lord.
She leaves to cherish her memory to her beloved husband, Mario Marcel Salas; her children; Marcus Johnson, Elena Salas-Williams(Larry), and Angela Salas; her grandchildren, Marcus Jr.,Eliana, Major, Aspen, Josiah, Chloe, Cassius, Noah, and expected grandchild due in the spring(Angela); siblings, Jennifer Louis (Jimmy), Dana Adams, James Lacy Jr. extended family; former students and colleagues; church family; friends; and all those whose lives were blessed by her presence.
Her earthly work is complete, but her love and legacy will endure forever.
Visitation will be held Friday, October 2, 2026 10:00am at Mt. Zion First Baptist Church
service will begin at 11:00am. Interment will follow at Meadowlawn Memorial Park.
