Brother Elbert Roberson, Sr., age 79, passed into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Sunday, October 24th, 2004 at Silver Creek Nursing Home in San Antonio. He was born on March 25th, 1925 in Utley, Texas to Johnny Robertson and Mary Lee Williams. He grew up in Sayersville Community, near Elgin, Texas and attended Bastrop County schools and he worked at the Elgin Meat Market. He attended Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and it was there that he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. He later moved to Austin where he worked at Sweeney Wholesale as a truck driver. This job took he and his family to San Antonio where he retired form the company in 1986. Brother Roberson was instrumental in establishing Sherman Chapel AME Church in San Antonio, Texas in December 1962, under the leadership of Rev. O.W. Hodges. He was a faithful Steward at Sherman Chapel until his health failed him in 1999. Brother Roberson was a devoted family and church man with a very kind heart. He would go out of his way to help a friend or family member; he would give you the shirt off his back if you asked him. He will be greatly missed but will live in our hearts and minds. Goddbye for now, we will all see you again when the Lord calls us home. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Yvonne Roberson and four brothers; Phillip Roberson, Joseph Roberson, T.C. Perkins and James E. Roberson. Brother Roberson is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruby D. Roberson, four daughters; Barbara Brown, Doris Roberson, Ruby Mercer and Lucille R. Holmes (Edward) all of San Antonio. Two sons survive; Elbert Roberson Jr.,(Betty) of San Antonio and James A. Roberson,(Carla) of Pflugerville. Eleven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and four sisters also survive; Rosie Lee Harden and Rosie Mae Loving of Austin, Gennie Bell Clark and Veola Thompson of San Antonio and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 30th, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. at the Sherman Chapel AME Church at 603 Erline St. San Antonio, Texas 78237. 210-433-3500.
