On December 12th, 1940 in Preston, Oklahoma, a beautiful girl came into the life of parents Ada and George Grayson who was named Elverne; called “Verne” by those in the family and friends.

Verne graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Haskell, Oklahoma, moved to Kansas City, Missouri and attended nursing school at St. Mary’s College earning the License Vocational Nursing Certification. While working in that field she married Airman Martin Luther Nalls Sr and to this union two children were born; Marci Lynette and Martin Luther Jr.  She returned to college while stationed in New Jersey, Alaska and finally San Antonio graduating from Southwest Texas University earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, finishing her career as a Contract Specialist for Kelly Air Force Base….…moving to Warner Robins Air Force Base in the same career when Kelly resolved. Concluding 29 years in government work, she moved back to San Antonio in 2012.

Verne joined Second Baptist Church on one New Years Eve where she became an official member January 1st, 1996.  She was a member of the Chancellor choir and once served as choir president.  She loved gospel music and was blessed with a beautiful voice.  She sang with the Servants in Praise  Gospel Group of San Antonio.

She was a member of Blacks in Government, a national organization.  There she served as Regional Director receiving numerous awards for her services.  She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary #128.  She was a member of the Red Hat Society Vintage Jewels and once sang at one of its monthly meetings.  As an Honorary Member of The Enlisted Association, she was special guest singer for every Annual Christmas Luncheon.

Verne’s mother, father, two brothers and son – Martin – preceded her in death.  She leaves to mourn her daughter, Marci; siblings, O. Marie Smith and Linda Roberts (Michael); brother Victor Cullom (Beatrice); grand children, Tiiyasha aka Tiki, Tommy, Martina, Justin, Martin (Aaliyah), Tearra and Brandon; great grand children: Alanii aka Chula, Mackenzii aka Kenzii, Solomon and Sherri.  She leaves her families: the Petits of Oklahoma, Hytches and Hunters of Waco, Pittmans of San Antonio and Hobbs of Dallas. This lovely personality leaves a host of friends in San Antonio and other states.
