Ethel Jewel Dillard was born to Sylvester Dillard, Sr and Lydia Mae Washington Dillard on August 29, 1934. Jewel was the second born of five children. She was born in Hallsville, Texas and attended elementary school there until the family moved to San Antonio in the early 1940’s. She continued her education at Cuney Elementary, Douglas Junior High and graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School.
Upon moving to San Antonio she was baptized at West Laurel Church of Christ but found her way to Dellcrest Church of Christ and remained a faithful member until illness shut her down.
She met and married John Shaw and they were blessed with four children, Phyllis, Gayle, John, Jr. and Darrell. Later in life she married Luther Potter. Mr. Potter left a lasting impression with her family and was immediately accepted.
Jewel’s nature was to care for others and she naturally transitioned into being a caregiver starting at Robert B. Green Hospital caring for infants and later worked at San Antonio State Hospital continuing to care for others. She remained there until retirement.
Her greatest love was not just her children but but there was a special love for her grandchildren. Always being the caregiver, she stepped in anytime they were in need even helping to raise them.
Jewel was preceded in death by her parents, Sylvester and Lydia Dillard; siblings, Doris Hillard, Sylvester Dillard, Jr. and Charles Ray Dillard; children, Gayle Shaw Sullivan and John Shaw, Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Phyllis and Darrell Shaw; brother, Leonard Dillard and her loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and friends.
