Gregory Neal Mogford
June 26, 1954 ~ January 11, 2023
Born in:
Abilene, Texas
Resided in:
San Antonio , Texas
Gregory Neal Mogford was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at the age of 68. Greg was born on June 26, 1954 in Abilene, TX to the late Sherry Paula Pechacek and Harold Neal Mogford. He graduated from TMI high school in 1972 and attended San Antonio Community College. While in college Greg took a job in a local cable station as a camera operator and discovered his passion for the film and television industry. By his early twenties he moved to KENS TV where he became a weekend camera man. In the mid-nineteen seventies he joined the Tisch Production Company. All of this hands-on-experience led him to become a freelance camera man and gaffer. In film and television the gaffer or chief lighting technician is the head electrician, responsible for the execution of the lighting plan for a production. For the next forty years Greg shot documentaries for the government, various corporations, the Catholic Church, and a wide array of sporting events such as the NBA Finals. Although born in Abilene, TX, Greg grew up in San Antonio. He loved the city and for more than twenty years he was the light designer for the Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony. Many a Thanksgiving Day Greg and his crew from his production company Texas Grip & Electric were along the river preparing for the broadcast of the parade. Although they were working on a holiday, Greg made sure there was time for them to have a Thanksgiving party. He was a fair and loyal employer. He retired in 2020.
Greg had a sharp wit and a keen perception of people. He relished intelligent conversations and enjoyed entertaining. He was never afraid to give his opinion when asked. Greg was a romantic and his sweet tender nature was clearly seen in his loving care of his wife, Laura. Without question, Laura was the love of his life. He was always giving her flowers, leaving notes of endearment, and endlessly smiling when she was with him. Greg enjoyed traveling with Laura, going out to beer and wine tastings, driving into the hill country, or just sitting on the patio. They had a daily exercise routine of holding hands while taking long walks. Greg was a good son, a dear brother, a loving husband, and an honorable human being.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Sherry Pechacek and Harold Neal Mogford. Greg will be dearly missed by his wife of seven years, Laura J. Mogford; his sister, Deborah Mogford; step-children, Todd Kramer (Jessica), Tonya Bartlett, Brian Kramer (Amber); numerous grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Greg was a great Co Worker and Friend of mine for Well over 30 years. He was one of the greats of our biz.
I know what a wonderful husband, dad, and friend he was to many. Laura, there are so many who love and care for you. Please know I am here for you anytime you need or want.
Greg was a regular part of our production crew for about 30 years. We met in the 1980s when we had a shoot in Houston. Most of our regular crew was from Boston but we all loved. working with Greg so much he became one of the boys. We shot in Texas, Louisiana and all over the country. No matter where we .headed, we would call Greg and he would load up a truck with the lighting and grip equipment we needed and meet us there. He was a good natured hard working guy and we enjoyed his comparisons of Boston and Texas culture. Film work is demanding and the hours long so it was great to work with Greg who found such joy in the grind.
He was a mentor to me in my youth, first working at TMS Productions in SA, then for years as a freelancer. Over the years I was fortunate enough to call him my friend. He would often call just to check in on me. Thanks for all that you taught me, all the laughs and great conversations! You were one of kind sir, they don’t make ‘em like that anymore! RIP Greg, you are missed!

Greg was a good friend and mentor. He was always available to lend a helping hand and did it with a wonderful sense of sarcasm and humor. Greg taught me that saying “NO” in a production was ok. “No” I’m not gonna move the truck! “No” I’m not gonna move the camera! I can hear him now! He taught me the fine art of making a “painkiller” drink and that it was never to early for a drink. I’m sorry we never had that lunch. Thanks for the memories, I’ll never forget them. Do me a favor my friend… As you, TC, and Robert Chambers are looking down on our productions, dont let us muck it up too much! Peace my friend, until soon.
I worked many times over the years with Greg. Whether it was with one of my brothers, Kim and Gary Bunch or when he worked on TNL for KABB/CW. He was big Teddy Bear of a man. Kind , loving , caring and a great heart ❤️. He will be missed.
Rest in Peace, old friend.

One thing the obit omitted is that Greg was the lighting director for the Fiesta Dinner Playhouse. He always had a great attitude and was always smiling. He was top notch at everything he did.
Those of us whom are blessed with a long life all suffer the loss of people whom matter and have helped shape our lives. I feel like when I am smiling, as thoughts of them flash in my mind through life, those feelings I have get to them on that other side of life. So smile 😃 if U can and they will know …
I didn’t get that beer together we talked about together Greg now that I’m back in ATX. I know my big smile gets all that way to the other side and U know I’m thinking of U brother. Thanks for it all.
