James Bryant Chesser, better known as 'Runt', was born in Northeast Texas on October 28, 1931, in the small farming community of Union Chapel to James Howard Chesser and Elendor Draper Chesser. He was the oldest of three children. He had a younger brother John Draper and sister Martha Robin. He spent his youth in the same area and later attended Texas A&M University to graduate as a civil engineer. After a short military service, J.B. began a long career with H.B. Zachry Construction Company where he accumulated many friends and became an integral part of the growth of San Antonio and the surrounding area. Jim was married to Linda Kay Underwood in 1963 and together they had two children -- Carrie Lorraine in 1964 and Howard Bryant in 1965. James Chesser is survived by his sister, ex-wife, children, nieces, and a nephew. James Chesser passed away on Tuesday, October 31, 2006. A memorial service will be held at the MeadowLawn Tribute Center on Sunday, November 5, 2006 at 1:30 pm. A gathering for friends and family will follow afterwards at the Chesser Hill home. He will be deeply missed by many whose life he touched.

  4. We only got to know Mr. Chesser over the last year of his life. He was a sweet man and we are grateful that his family allowed us to provide care for him over that year. His children’s love and dedication are a testament to us of the kind of man and father he was. We will miss his and his family’s presence here at Medina Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center. You are all in our thoughts and prayers as you grieve the loss of this special man.

  11. It is difficult to say good bye to two brothers within 10 days but we know they are at peace and will watch over their loved ones.

  12. I never heard the nickname “Runt”, and to me (a 10-year younger cousin) I remember how big and tough he looked in his Texas A&M senior boots! James Bryant is etched in my memory as one of the really good guys.
