james malkemus

June 29, 1936 ~ January 4, 2024

Born in: Riverside, California
Resided in: San Antonio, Texas

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the unexpectant passing of James Malkemus on January 4, 2024. He was born into a military family in Anaheim, California on June 29, 1936, to the parents of George Dewey Malkemus Sr. and Dorothy Louise West Malkemus and his two older siblings. Also known as “Buddy” to his family, he would be the third out of five children welcomed into the Malkemus family.

Being in a military family they moved often in his early life. In a 12 year span the family lived in as many as 4 different states including Panama Canal. It was not until his father’s retirement in 1948 that they settled down in San Antonio.

James received his formal education at South San Antonio High School, but by the age of 17 he would join the military just like his father had. He joined the United States Navy for 2 years before being transferred to the Air Force. After a few years with the Air Force, he joined the Army Reserves as Active Duty serving in Korean War and Dessert Storm as an aircraft mechanic. He retired from the Army in 1996 as a Sergent First Class. He enjoyed his retirement by playing golf, taking care of the stray dogs that happened upon his home, looking after his sisters, and playing the lottery, especially scratch offs. He was up to a trip to Eagle Pass at any given moment.

He was a simple man, not needing much. He could find the best hole in the wall restaurants or the freshest fruit stand and his love for a good tamales was impressive.

James is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Franklin “Butch” Malkemus. He is survived by his only child, Terri Lynn Malkemus Davidson; his siblings, George ”Sonny” Malkemus Jr., Beverly Loraine Hunt, and Elsie “Tootie” Shows; his twin grandchildren Rachel Davidson Amaya and Michael Davidson and their spouses; his great grandchildren, Hannah, Justin, and Logan. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews including a dear niece Debbie Rodriguez who became close to Buddy in the later years as she visited regularly and helped with doctor appointments.

A service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at 10AM where military honors will be presented. In leu of flowers please consider a donation to your local animal shelter.

  1. CandleImageBuddy:

What a guy he was with a great sense of humor and always had a smile on his face. He was very active and loved life while playing golf. I guess he will make everyone in heaven laugh and smile as he has already entered the gates. Although he was my uncle I only spent time during Christmas and a few other times and he always made us laugh!

    Buddy you will be missed!

  2. CandleImageBuddy I will truly miss you.. We had great times together eating breakfast 3 times a week our occasional trips to the casino.
Me taking you on a day trip to Corpus just so you can visit The VFW halls to see if some of your old friends where still around.

I am going to miss you. We fought all the time but that’s what brothers an sister do to show how much we loved each other.. This is not good bye till I see you again

  5. CandleImageBrother how much will you be missed by me. Miss your coming each morning bringing me the paper and just sitting at the table talking. Miss how we shared our meals, you cooking one day and me the next. I will miss how we took care of each other during illnesses.
All my friends knew you through me and know how close of a relationship we shared. How blessed I have been with you in my life. I remember how we grew up in the military and once while in France Field, Panama during WWll you gave your gas masks away for rock candy and then we would climb the mango trees and get rashes so off to the clinic we went and the nurses said “here comes the Malkemus clan.” I will miss when we would just sit and talk and laugh and reminisce over our past. You did not remember your nickname “Muscles”. You were so skinny and would flex your arm to show us your muscles. I have a picture of you doing this. I could go on forever remembering out time together. I love you Brother and will always hold you close to my heart.
    Your sister, Beverly (Sister)

  6. CandleImageDidn’t know you long but in the short time we did, me and my kids got to know the funny, kindhearted, don’t take no crap from nobody person you were. The kids say hi and were heart broken when they heard the news, especially Evan. We are going to miss you and the breakfast conversations with Debbie and Rene at Sabor. Rest easy Jim, we love you.❤️

  7. CandleImageThank you for being a part of our family. You will be greatly missed, Uncle Jim. May you rest in peace and dance with the angels in the sky. — Barbie and Jessica Toscano and family.

  8. CandleImageBuddy I do know you are greatly missed. I remember the times I came to San Antonio and we played golf a sport you have always loved. We had wonderful times on our few outings that we had but they are a great memory of you and fun times. May you rest in peace and the angels and God will take care of you. Love you. Carole
