James Charles (Jake) Venable was called to rest on July 12, 2026.  Jake, an avid hunter, enjoyed sitting around the campfire with family and friends at days end. He was born to James Albert Venable and Mary Jeanette Shelton on December 14, 1938, in Abilene, Texas. He had two siblings, Marshall Lee arriving on May 22, 1940, and Jeanette Annyce on Oct. 7, 1942.  The family experienced great sorrow when their father, James Albert Venable died of a cerebral hemorrhage due to an accident before Jeanette Annyce was born. Jake grew up quickly and had a variety of jobs throughout his life. He was a golf caddy, telegraph operator for the railroad, hog farmer, raised horses, but when his uncle called he and his brother went to work in the oilfield. This sparked his lifelong career as a directional driller, consultant, salesman, manager and COO. He started a couple of companies and when the business slowed, he went to culinary school and cooked at several colleges in Abilene and Marshall. He enjoyed cooking and taught his children to not only hunt their food, but prepare and butcher their game, and serve a great dinner to their family.

Jake married Vena Jane Archa, and they had three boys: James Clifford, Jimmy Augustus, and Justin Lance.  Jake then married Barbara Jean Williams and they had a son, Jason Jay. In 1985 Jake married Cecilia Gutierrez and this union brought Jake’s only girl to the family Breanna Lynn.

Jake was superseded in death by his parents, brother, Marshall Lee in 2013, his sister, Jeanette Annyce Minetra in 2018, and his daughter-in-law, Vicki Renee Van Auken Venable in 2021.

He is survived by his wife of 40 yrs Cecilia Gutierrez Venable, Jake’s five children and grandchildren: 1) James Clifford; his sons, James Christopher (wife Janis Wehmeyer) and Jacob Lee; 2) Jimmy Augustus (wife Robyn Fisher), daughter Jamie La Jean Clark (husband, Logan Clark)  and son Jared Augustus ; 3) Justin Lance (Donna), his daughters Ashley Nicole Quattlebaun (husband, Rusty Quattlebaun ) and Justina Leann Beam (husband, Chase Beam); 4) Jason Jay (wife Deborah Lorraine Terrell), daughter, Lorren Ashlee Tankersley Padron, son Joshua Jay (wife Tiffany Humphreys) and their daughter, Jada Leigh-Anne; and 5) Breanna Lynn (Matthew Ray Luna) sons Luke James and Jon Ray, and daughter, Belle Rene.
