James “Gramps” Miller Jr.: Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Brother-in-Law and Uncle passed away with his family by his side Tuesday April 16, 2024.

Jim was born in Mt. Gilead, North Carolina to J. M. Miller and Lela Dorman Miller on June 5, 1928.

Jim’s Mother passed away at childbirth, and Jim was raised by his Aunt and Uncle in Dunn, North Carolina. He joined the Merchant Marines at age 16 and spent nearly two years travelling the Atlantic from the Philippines to around the Cape of Africa. At 18, Jim joined the Army Air Corp which later became the U. S. Air Force. He was stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX for most of his career other than tours in South Korea and Upper Heyford, England. During his career, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He retired at Lackland AFB on September 30, 1976 as a Senior Master Sergeant with thirty years of credited service.

Prior to his retirement from the Air Force, Jim acquired his real estate license and worked part time listing and selling properties in San Antonio. Upon ending his military career, he pursued real estate full time owning three offices along the way. He never knew a stranger; and, more times than not was the number one sales agent throughout his successful 50 year real estate career. He was always the first to help anyone in need whether it was a client or another sales associate, many who went on to have their own very successful careers.

When Gramps, as he was lovingly known by the family, wasn’t working, he was hunting or fishing. Very little got in the way of Gramps being in place on opening day of hunting season which he regularly shared with his sons and several grandchildren. If hunting season was over and the weather was nice, he loved to fish with family or friends. These activities often found him sharing the “goods” by making venison tacos or frying fish for lunch for everyone at his real estate office.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, his aunt and uncle, his sister and brother-in-law and several cousins.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 34 years Sandy; Sons Mike and wife Patt, Pat and wife Kathy, Craig and wife Jodi; Daughters Kelly and husband Steve, Kristine and husband Scott, Brother-in-law Richard and wife Sharon, 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, several cousins, nieces and nephews.

We are very grateful to Home Instead personnel and the nurses and aides of Crest Hospice for the genuine care they exhibited during their time with us.

Jim was a member of both Charles W. Anderson Masonic Lodge #1413 and Alzafar Shrine Temple for over 50 years and was very supportive of the Shrine Children’s Hospitals. Our family humbly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made for the hospitals and sent to: Alzafar Shrine Temple, 901 N. Loop 1604 West, San Antonio, TX 78232
