John A. Barney, age 80 of San Antonio, Texas, passed away December 21st, 2023 at his home. He was the son of late Rolla and Anna Lodge Barney. John was also proceeded in death by his siblings; Allen and Eugene Barney and Mercy Ward.
John is survived by his wife of 32 years, Shirley; brother, Ishmael (Amy) Barney; children, Jannette (Jerry) Bole, Jackie (John) Ball, John (Amy) Hulka; grand-daughters Jordan and Jadyn Ball along with a host of nephews, nieces and cousins.
John was born on January 14, 1943 in Muskegon, Michigan. He volunteered as a firefighter for Fruitport Fire Department, participated in the wild horse races at rodeos and he was a 4-H leader in Michigan.
John moved to San Antonio, Texas in the early 1980s. He worked at Alamo Iron Works where he met and later married Shirley Harvey on December 30, 1990. John enjoyed being a bartender at Farmers Daughter and H&R Ice House. During his free time, you could find John sitting in front of his garage performing “Neighborhood Watch”, filling bicycle tires and balls with air for the children or “supervising” the workers at Zach’s Auto Shop.
One of the many talents John had was building rooms, he even remodeled his home for his mother-in-law, Maxine Harvey, after she suffered a stroke. John never met a stranger and was willing to help anyone. Mr. John A. Barney is loved by many including his extended family Stella (Bib) Snider, Bill (Randy) Harvey, Beverly (Art) Lay, Jo (Chuck) Harvey, Mike Ward, Samantha Centeno and family. He will never be forgotten.
