Johnny Enrique Valdez
April 19, 1968 ~ June 28, 2023
Resided in:
San Antonio, Texas
Johnny was born in the Caribbean on the Island of Barbados in April of 1968. He was the second of three children born to Luciano (“Johnny”) Valdez and Joanie Davis. Island life was pretty simple for a child. He spent much of his time on the beach and playing on the reef during low tide. The ocean provided hours of entertainment and throughout his life was a place where Johnny felt at home. Johnny lived in Barbados until he was eight years old, but he was always a “Beach Boy” at heart with a free Spirit that rode the ocean waves and soared with the wind.
In 1976 he came to the United States and settled in Brownsville, Texas, where he came to know all of his paternal family for the first time. Everyone welcomed Johnny and his siblings with open arms and generous hearts. It was the beginning of wonderful relationships with extended family members who showed Johnny love and support over the years.
Johnny knew he was loved, and as a child had a very playful spirit. He spent countless hours fishing, skate boarding, doing tricks on his bike, and playing with G I Joe action figures with his cousin, Raymond Camina. He attended Sharp Elementary, Cummings Junior High and Hannah High School.
Later on the Lord blessed him with a beautiful daughter, Ashley Anderson . Johnny loved his family very much and was so proud of his daughter and granddaughters, Kyrie and Olivia.
It was truly amazing to watch Johnny play with children who always seemed to gravitate towards him. It was the same with animals. They could sense his kind and loving spirit, and when Johnny was near, they did their best to get his attention so he would play with them. Johnny had a beautiful voice and loved singing karaoke. His favorite artists were Journey and George Michael. He was also very gifted with his hands. He had an appreciation for muscle cars and motorcycles and enjoyed tinkering with motors.
Johnny never met a stranger and was happy to strike up conversations with anyone. There are so many people he met over the years who welcomed Johnny into their homes, to their dinner table, and to have fun playing with their children and pets. He lived life on his own terms, doing the best he could along the way. He cherished his close relationships with his father and mother, who were both there for him in good times, and in bad. His life was not always easy, but through it all, Johnny came to know and love the Lord. He was a Believer and his favorite Psalm was Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd.” Johnny’s Bibles were full of notes and thoughts he wrote down while spending time with the Lord. In Hebrews 13 God reminds us “never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.” Johnny is in God’s hands now and we find comfort knowing the Lord has taken him home so he can rest peacefully.
Johnny is survived by his mother, daughter, granddaughters, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and many cousins. All are welcome to join us at Mount Olive Lutheran Church for a memorial church service in honor of Johnny on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 2:00PM. The church address and phone number are:
