Resided in: San Antonio, Texas

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, Josie M. Cuellar, who departed this life on May 4, 2025, at the age of 85.

Born on March 19, 1940, in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, Josie brought light and warmth into the world from her very first breath. She later made her home in San Antonio, Texas, where she built a life rooted in love, hard work, and dedication to her family.

Known to all as the backbone of our family, she was a woman of immense strength, gentle compassion, and boundless warmth. Her nurturing spirit touched every generation—always putting others before herself, always offering a comforting hand, a warm meal, or a kind word exactly when it was needed most.

A gifted florist, Josie had an eye for beauty and a heart drawn to nature. She adored flowers and found joy in ladybugs, seeing in them tiny reminders of life’s gentle wonders. Her love for color and fragrance filled both her home and her community with joy. Her kitchen was often filled with the delicious aromas of her lovingly prepared meals—each dish a testament to her care and creativity. And when she sang, her voice was soft, sweet, and full of soul—a gift that soothed, uplifted, and stayed with you.

Above all, Josie was a devoted mother, cherished sister, and adoring grandmother, whose legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure.

Josie is preceded in death by both parents, Casimiro Martinez and Felicita Zapata, as well as her husband Pedro Cuellar. Left to cherish her memory are her children Rosalinda Cuellar, Norma Idalia Cuellar, Pete Cuellar IV, Hector Cuellar, Janie San Juanita Cuellar Medellin, and Michael Cuellar, siblings Lupe Garza, Gloria Navarro, Carolina Martinez, as well as thirteen Grandchildren and fifteen Great-Grandchildren.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known her.

  1. CandleImageI wish I could put into words how much you truly meant to me. You were the cement that kept everyone together and the firecracker that kept them on their toes.
We first conversed on Mother’s Day 1989. I was so nervous. Your smile calmed me down. Pete, your oldest son and your ‘mini me’, was holding my hand and gently squeezed it telling me, you’re doing ok. Mom likes you!
You tricked me though, handed me taco and said try this. I looked at it and saw French style green beans in a corn tortilla, well I thought that was what it was. Nope it was Cactus. It was very Good!!
I knew then we were going to have fun in our journey of life. I will never ever forget the talk we had about marriage and love!! It kept Pete and I together for 37 yrs and counting. I have so much more to say. But will tell it soon. I LOVE YOU AND WILL FOREVER MISS YOU!! Rest in Peace MAMA, go and hug Dad for us all!!
