June F. Yancey

March 11, 1936 ~ April 30, 2023
Born in:
Waelder, Texas
Resided in:
San Antonio, Texas
Surrounded by her loved ones, June Franklin Yancey passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2023.
Eighty-seven years ago, Kyle Hunt drove a horse and buggy down the dirt roads of Waelder, Texas, and returned home with the midwife. June Gloria Hunt was born to Ardessa and Kyle Hunt on that day, March 11, 1936.
At a very early age, June accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at the jewel in the heart of the Armstrong Colony in Waelder, Mt. Olive Baptist Church. June and her sisters were taught to play the piano by their mother, Ardessa, who was Mt. Olive’s pianist.
She met her future love and husband at Mt. Olive and, in her beautiful wedding dress, was united in holy matrimony to Elmo Norman Franklin Jr.
June deeply loved and held precious all of her family. At Elmo’s passing, she became her family’s strength and backbone, firmly holding her family together while raising her four children, Porchanee, Garry, Debra, and Vickie, as a single mom.
She later found love again, marrying Master Sgt. Cecil Yancey Sr., USAF Ret. (deceased). They spent many wonderful and happy years together.
Throughout her life, June made serving God a priority in her life and her family’s lives. As a member of St. Stephens Baptist Church, she played piano at BTU and some evening services, was Church Clerk and on the Usher Board. Later, she was also a faithful Usher Board member of Mount Zion First Baptist Church and The Exciting West End Baptist Church.
June excelled at community service as the President of Ralph Bunche High School Alumni for several years, presiding over the naming of the “Ralph Bunche Street” in Waelder. She also enjoyed playing the piano, ceramics, and participating in a Kelly AFB bowling league. June was also a civil servant and retired in 2000 after 32 years of federal service at Kelly Air Force Base.
June is preceded in death by her parents, Ardessa and Kyle Hunt, her siblings Ocie Mae Hunt, Alexander Hunt, Ruth Ella Smith, and Zelma Grace Hargrove, her grandson, Jonathan Franklin, and her son-in-law, Clifford J Latham.
She is survived by her children, Garry Franklin (Charlyne), Porchanee Schoninger (Horst), Vickie Latham and Debra Johnson; her siblings Olivia Ussery and Franklin Hunt; her grandchildren Gloria Snapp (Darryl), Christopher Nealy, Hermann Randall III (Shannette), Garry Franklin Jr., Jason Franklin, Destiny Franklin, Clifford A. Latham (Roni), Thomas Latham (Evelyn), and Brandon Latham (Rachel); her great grandchildren Cameron Snapp, Ardessa Nealy, Alexandria Nealy, Aaron Hickman, Kyland Randall, Braylon Randall, Nyomi Franklin, Quinn Thornton, Ivy Franklin, Aiden Childs, Zaiden Wilson, Aleah Kauvaka, Theodore Kauvaka and namesake Maya June Latham; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

I am just devastated at this news!! June and I shared fond memories of our growing up days in Armstrong Colony and at Mt. Olive Baptist Church rural Waelder Tx where she met her first husband, Rev. E. N. Franklin’s son, if my memory is correct. 😘. We kept in touch throughout the years for the Ralph Bunche High School Reunions, staying at a hotel in Gonzales and traveling around the same time in order to follow each other at night back to the hotel. She loved her roots! We always looked forward to Mt. Olive’s Church Anniversary & Homecoming every first Sunday in August so we could see each other and many other family and friends. We kept in touch by telephone calls and I can remember that she didn’t like long conversations.😘. I will miss our communications. I always made her chuckle by telling her that I was going to steal her sweet son, Gary.😄. Ecclesiastes 3:1 & 2 says there is a time and place for everything; a time to be born and a time to die. It was June’s time. God would not have allowed it to happen if it wasn’t. We must all pray for our comfort, peace, and strength.🛐🛐🙏🏽🙏🏽♥️✝️
Cousin Eva,

My heart is with all the family! Praying as I write this message! Aunt June was so very special! We all know she is with our other family members, resting until the great getting up morning! This is not the end, just a separation!
We shall all be together again!
