Born in: Yoakum, Texas
Resided in: San Antonio, Texas

Margie Nell Littlejohn left this earthly place for her heavenly home on Sunday, February 16, 2025. Born in Yoakum, Texas on August 14, 1939, she was the sixth of seven children born to Nellie and Albert Arkadie Sr.

Margie accepted Christ at an early age at Beth Elder Baptist Church in Yoakum, Texas. As with all the Arkadie children, Margie was quick to brag on her beloved Yoakum and the lessons learned from growing up in God’s Country. Margie received her formal education at the historically acclaimed Asberry School, which is recognized by the State of Texas Historical Commission as the only school in Yoakum responsible for educating African Americans starting in the 1930’s. Upon graduation, Margie followed her passion and moved to San Antonio to pursue her dreams of becoming a nurse. She obtained her certificate as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in 1960.

Margie began her nursing career at Baptist Hospital in San Antonio where she honed her skills. On Feb 15,1964 Margie met and married Raymond Littlejohn, Jr. (a military man) and to this union God blessed them with two children, Janice (born in Taipei Taiwan, Republic of China, and Michael (born in San Antonio, Texas). Her marriage and commitment to being a military wife afforded her the opportunity to travel around the world. The family lived in Taiwan, Turkey, New York, Mississippi, and Texas. They moved twelve times in eighteen years, sometimes being stationed multiple times at various military facilities.

Although a quiet and unassuming woman, Margie had a real zest for life. She was an avid BOWLER for over fifty years and had the trophies to prove it. She was a diehard Spurs fan, loved watching Venus and Serena Williams on the tennis court, and never missed the Olympics Figure Skating competitions.

After retiring in 1999 from a long and rewarding career as a Nurse, Margie continued to offer medical care to family and friends. Even though she dealt with her own medical issues, she never complained about caring for others. She continued her service in the medical field by volunteering at Wilford Hall Medical Center in the pharmacy at Lackland Airforce Base. She never slowed down or let grass under her feet and continued her life of service to others until her health prevented it.

For many years Margie opened her home during the holidays to feed servicemen and women who could not be with their own families. Margie believed in being neighborly. She loved her neighbors, and they loved her back. She took real pride in her neighborhood, her yard, and especially her beloved plants. Often that neighborly spirit was manifested by the exchanging of food, recipes, watering each other’s plants, bringing in trash cans from the curb, or just checking in on one another daily. Margie also served on the Heritage Northwest HOA Board for over fifteen years. Margie’s commitment to community service extended to her working tirelessly at the area food bank for over twenty years. The family extends enormous gratitude to her neighbors Tom and Maria Brown, Elodia Rodriguez, Javier and Christi Baeza, Rudy and Anna Marie Zapata for watching over Margie these last few years.

As we all smile with remembrance Margie’s favorite sayings were: “It is what it is” and “Whatever Whatever.”

Margie is preceded in death by her mother and father, Nellie and Albert Arkadie Sr., her brothers Albert Jr., Clifford, Mack, Horace, and Waymon Arkadie, also her big sister, Lorine Hopkins McClain.

Margie leaves to mourn her transition, her children, Janice Littlejohn Gibbons and Michael Littlejohn (wife Pamela), two grandchildren Anthony Gibbons and Asia Gibbons, along with a caravan of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and her beloved neighborhood of Heritage Northwest, San Antonio, Texas.
