Born in:
Giddings, Texas
Resided in:
San Antonio, Texas
Our beloved mother and grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, Mattie Evelyn Hodge, affectionately known as “Big Mama,” entered eternal rest on October 28, 2024 at the age of 96. She has gone to her reward in heaven. Mattie was born on May 15, 1928 to the late parents: Leonard and Mattie Govan in Giddings, Texas.
“Big Mama” met and married the love of her life, Darvel L. Hodge Sr., where they shared a beautiful union, and raised their four children together, until his departure.
“Big Mama” held her last position with Schertz/Cibilo/University City ISD, where she served as a custodian, retiring after 20 years of service. In her spare time, she also enjoyed gardening, tailoring clothing, and dining in at Luby’s Cafeteria. Although Luby’s was a favorite, she enjoyed the company of family as she would prepare her favorite dish, “enchiladas.”
Our memories of her are countless and will be forever cherished. She will be dearly missed.
She was greeted in heaven by her parents, her husband, Darvel L. Hodge Sr., her daughter: Gloria J. Hodge, and her sister-in-law: Alvina Govan.
She leaves to cherish in her memory: her loving children: Lois Darlene Hodge, Darvel (B. Darlene) Hodge Jr., John (Julee) L. Hodge, and Delbert (Gwen) L. Hodge; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and her brother: Jay Vance Govan, and numerous other close relatives and friends.
