Mattie Lee Coleman Mitchell was born on September 6, 1928 in Seguin, Texas to loving parents, Floyd Coleman Sr. and Idella McKnight Coleman. She was baptized at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Austin, Texas by Reverend S. J. Davis at an early age. In her life, she gave her time to both church and civic organizations and volunteering for her grandchildren's schools and after school programs.
She attended high school at Anderson High in Austin, Texas. She moved to Los Angeles, California where she met and then married John Mitchell in 1958. She and John opened a restaurant in South Central Los Angeles with the best Soul Food in California. She worshiped at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church under the pasturage of Reverend J. B. Looney. After she retired from the restaurant business, she and John moved to San Antonio, in 1997. She then joined Emmanuel Baptist Church under the pasturage of Reverend H. R. James Jr. where she was an active member until her health failed.
Preceding her in death were her husband John W. Mitchell, her parents Floyd Coleman and Idella Coleman Henderson, step mother Rosa Lee Coleman; sisters, Ida Mays, Alvenia Swan, Ora Mae Kennard, and Lollie Brown; brothers Floyd and John Coleman.
Mattie leaves behind her sister Eugenia Prosser of San Antonio, And ten grand children, Michael Gerrad, Mikaela, Jordan, Jaylen, Jayden Smith, Glenda Crutchers, Elizabeth Devlian, Sherrill Grey, John and Darryl Johnson and also a daughter in-law Phyllis Mitchell. In addition adopted daughter (Niece) Della "Elaine" Brown-Smith, adopted sons (Nephews), Chester Prosser Jr., Eddie Douglas III, Robert Mays, Leonard Mays, Joe Greene, Robert Strambler and Gary Riley adopted daughters (nieces), Shirley Ann Sutton, Jo Ann Glover, Barbara Cunningham, Alvenetta Henry, Darla Riley, Sandra Lynn Strambler, Connie Brown, Debra Medows, and Maureen Brown.
She also leaves behind a list of great nieces and great nephews, and a long list of cousins and very close friends.
