Maura Fernandez, age 63 of San Antonio, a cherished daughter, sister, aunt, godmother, cousin, and friend to many, passed away surrounded by her family on January 4, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Maura was born on July 5, 1959, in Kingsville, Texas. She graduated from H.M. King High School and attended Texas A & I University. She went on to have an impressive 35 year career with H-E-B after working her way up in the company starting as a teenager and retiring in 2020. Her greatest passion in life was for her family and friends, her dog Spot, traveling, golfing, hiking, and spending time at the beach. She was a dedicated political activist, donor, volunteer, and was known for her selfless, generous spirit.
She is survived by her loving and devoted family, mother Dalia Tamez (Charlie) and father Joe DeCaso; sisters Veronica Flagiello (Dan), Katy Peterson (Donna); brothers Homer Fernandez and Efrain Fernandez, Tony Tamez (Amy), Joe Tamez, and Jason DeCaso; nieces and nephews Gina McCormack (Mikey), Michael, Anthony, Megan, Ashton, and Matthew Tamez; cherished godchildren Sadie Aasletten Okafor (Quincy) and Tristan Rios; numerous cousins; and life-long friend Jesus Garza.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 3, 2023, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church located at 13715 Riggs Rd, Helotes, TX 78023. A private interment of her ashes will follow at a later date.
